Alexis Ohanian's 776 Invitational, which is a track event only for women, has now been renamed to Athlos NYC. Gabby Thomas, who is the first athlete to partner with the organization, has reacted to the new name and to the commencement of the event.

The American sprinter recently qualified for the 200m at the Paris Olympics 2024. She produced a dominant performance in the finals of the event and booked her berth in Paris. She clocked 21.81s at the US trials to stand atop the podium, and behind her were Brittany Brown and McKenzie Long, who claimed second and third place, respectively.

Following the Olympics, Thomas will be running the 200m event at the Athlos NYC, which will take place in Icahn Stadium in New York in September. The event's Instagram page shared a video announcing the same and revealing its new name. The caption read:

"It's official, the 776 Invitational has officially been revealed as Athlos NYC and I’m thrilled to announce I’ll be running in September at Icahn Stadium in New York!!! I’m honored to be a part of something that revolutionizes the sport for future generations all while competing alongside the women who inspire me everyday 🤎' - @gabbythomas"

Gabby Thomas opens up about partnering with Alexis Ohanian's track event

Gabby Thomas recently spoke about the 776 Invitational during the Business of Women Sports Summit. She was excited to partner with the organization and revealed that with this track event for women, they will reinvent the format of the sport to provide the best experience to the athletes.

"I am excited to partner with forward-thinking organizations like 776 that share our vision for advancing women's track," Gabby Thomas said. "Through this investment, we hope to not only provide athletes with the resources and visibility they need to have enduring careers but also to inspire fans world wide with a reinvented format to experience the best of our sport."

The Athlos NYC aims to be one of the revolutionary changes in women's sports and elevate the profile of top women athletes.

This will offer the largest purse ever for a women-only competition, with winners taking $60,000, which is way more than the prize amount Olympic gold medalists will be receiving this year. Athletes in second and third place will receive $25,000 and $10,000, respectively.
