Season 2 of Rhythm + Flow released episodes 5-7 on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. In episode 6, Points for Originality, the seven remaining contestants were challenged to produce their debut singles and shoot their cover photos. Everyone wanted to showcase their personality and share their story through their verse. One such artist was DreTL, whose performance amazed the judges.
DreTL wanted his debut record to talk about his troubled childhood and everything he had experienced to be where he was. He explained that his song was motivational rather than depressing since it talked about his achievements and constant effort to better himself.
Rhythm + Flow judge Ludacris praised DreTL's lyrics and storytelling skills. DreTL's stage presence and ability to hold the audience's attention impressed the judge, who said:
"I felt your heart, and I felt your energy, and I felt the truth."
The other judges echoed Ludacris' judgment, applauding his originality and creativity. Guest judge, GloRilla was so amazed by DreTL's performance, that she had no criticism for him, only compliments. Their feedback encouraged DreTL to be better. He left the stage feeling satisfied.
"That was more than what I wanted" — Rhythm + Flow star DreTL celebrates after the judges applaud his performance
DreTL was paired with renowned producer, Datboisqueeze, who had previously worked with artists like 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Gucci Mane, and more. The Rhythm + Flow star was excited to collaborate with a fellow Atlanta resident, convinced he would understand his style and concept. He explained that he wanted to create trap music with soul samples layered in it.
DreTL knew that with the end drawing closer there was no room for mistakes. As a result, he wanted to put his best foot forward and avoid the risk of being sent home.
His new single, High Definition, provided a deeper look into who he was. While detailing the story behind the song, DreTL revealed that it talked about his childhood and upbringing. He wanted the record to acknowledge the hurdles he overcame in the absence of his parents, who kept going in and out of prison.
"It's talking about how to live and make it through, so it's really, like, motivational, instead of depressing," he said.
However, the recording process was not easy. The Rhythm + Flow star felt stuck at times and fumbled while rapping. After multiple attempts and following Datboisqueeze's advice, DreTL managed to ace his performance.
For his cover photoshoot, DreTL wanted to portray the idea of coming out of "dark places." So, he requested the director to take a few shots with light shining down on him. After a long photo shoot, the Rhythm + Flow star left the set feeling satisfied with the results.
While speaking to the cameras, DreTL explained he went "extra hard" because he wanted to make something of himself and his family. Despite the thrill of being a reality TV participant, DreTL confessed it was difficult to manage school and the competition side by side. Nonetheless, he was determined to make an impact on the judges.
After listening to his record, Latto praised him, saying he had "something that can't be taught."
"It's really in you, not on you," she added.
However, the Rhythm + Flow judge suggested that DreTL control his energy so his voice would not crack or shake. Finally, Latto praised the cover photo's idea and said it represented DreTL perfectly.
DJ Khaled shared a similar sentiment and called his performance "raw." DreTL's writing skills and creative punchlines impressed him. Meanwhile, the Rhythm + Flow star's ability to talk about the past, present, and future in one song amazed Ludacris.
GloRilla applauded DreTL's energy and stage presence, admitting she resonated with it. When she stated she had no criticism for DreTL, the participant felt confident about his act. After walking backstage, DreTL gushed with excitement and happiness. As he celebrated, he said:
"Y'all, that was everything I wanted. That was more than what I wanted."
