Love Island UK season 12 premiered on June 9, with Maya Jama returning as host. On the first night, the Islanders entered the villa and paired up.
During the first recoupling, Toni chose Ben, leaving Shakira single. Normally, she would have been sent home, but since it was the first episode, Maya gave her 24 hours to find a partner. If she succeeds, she stays; if not, she goes home.
"If none of the boys want to recouple with you, sadly, it will be you that's going home," she said.
Shakira now had a deadline to follow to sustain herself in the villa, if she failed to meet it, she would be sent home.
What did the Love Island UK host Maya Jama tell Shakira at the recoupling ceremony on season 12 episode 1?
Toni entered the Love Island UK villa as the first bombshell of the house. Being a bombshell came with a perk. It meant that Toni could choose a boy of her liking to pair up with. But that would also mean that she would leave that boy's partner single and susceptible to elimination.
At the Love Island UK coupling ceremony, Maya Jama told Toni that she needed to steal a boy from his existing partner to couple up with. Naming the boys she had an option to pick, Maya said she could choose from Tommy, Blu, Conor, Harry, Dejon, and Ben. She then asked her who she was going to pick.
Toni took Ben's name because she felt the strongest connection to him as of yet, with whatever she knew of the people in the villa. When she picked Ben, a sense of relief washed over the other ladies of the villa because it meant that they weren't being singled out that night.
Maya then asked Ben to come and stand next to Toni in the centre while the other couples remained seated.
"Shakira, you are now single. Please stand up," said Maya.
She then told Shakira that the good news was that she wasn't being dumped from the villa that night. Shakira also hooted at what Maya said because she was happy not to leave. Some of her acquaintances in the villa felt relieved that their friend wasn't being sent home, but there was a twist.
Maya revealed that while she wasn't going home that night, she could be going home the night after. She explained that Shakira now had 24 hours to find a connection with one of the boys in the villa. If one of them decided to couple up with her, then she would be safe and wouldn't have to go home.
However, the girl he would leave to be with Shakira would be dumped from the Love Island UK villa in her place. She added that because Toni stole Ben recently, they couldn't be broken up, so Shakira would have to go for boys other than Ben.
