The ongoing season 19 of America's Got Talent has more Golden Buzzers than any other installement of the show. This is because this season has given two Golden Buzzers to each of the four judges and one to the host Terry Crews, bringing the count to 9.
In the previous six episodes, audiences saw judges and the host give away 8 of the 9 total Golden Buzzers. The AGT audition episode 7, which was released on July 16, saw a pair of contestants (Yuya and Ruy) bagging the last Golden Buzzer of the season from Sofia Vergara.
Yuya and Ruy were part of a comedy duo who went by the name of Schumacher and hailed from Japan. They had the judges crack up with their comic skills which made Sophia endow them with the prestigious buzzer.
Schumacher's Golden Buzzer-winning performance on America's Got Talent season 19 episode 7
The Schumacher duo introduced itself in a satirical way by repeatedly saying "Hello" and mirroring each other's words. After that, when Howie Mandel asked them if they lived in Japan, they nodded their heads and said yes. They also shared that it was their first time in America and that they thought Americans were beautiful "humans".
When Simon complimented them and said, "I think you're all beautiful as well", they replied, "We know". The performers added that they had been doing comedy for 10 years but this was their first time overseas.
For their America's Got Talent act, Ruy turned himself into different animals as Yuya handed him masks of the animals from behind a black screen. Ruy first wore the mask of a dog, then draped himself with black duct tape and wore a zebra mask. After that, he put on a unicorn mask and popped a balloon with his single horn, which made the judges chuckle.
While undressing the previous costume, Ruy unveiled a giraffe suit underneath but he didn't put on a mask this time. This left the judges and the audience puzzled about what he was about to do. Just then, Yuya walked out wearing a giraffe suit and a deer mask and positioned Ruy's face between his legs.
Their act was a little confusing at first but turned out to be one-of-a-kind by the end of it. It saw the audience present at the America's Got Talent set laughing out loud alongside the judges. Their performance also garnered a standing ovation from the audience, Howie Mandel, and Simon Cowell.
Simon called their performance "genius" and reiterated the fact that they were 10 years in the making. He also told them that they were "really funny". Making the crowd laugh further, the duo said that the only tough decision between them was to decide who was going to be the giraffe on top in the final act.
Sofia asked them what their performance was called. She added that she didn't understand if it was a comedy skit or a puppet act. Even though she called their act "ridiculous" and "nonsense," the actress added that she thought it deserved the Golden Buzzer, and pressed it.
The America's Got Talent set got covered in golden confetti, and there was disbelief on Ruy and Yuya's faces at first which changed into tears of joy. An audience member was heard saying, "My cheeks hurt", which echoed the sentiments of everyone who was watching.
New episodes of America's Got Talent season 19 come out on Tuesdays, at 8 pm ET, on NBC.
