Canadian-American actress and film producer Gloria Reuben is the latest to join the cast of Boston Blue, an upcoming spinoff that will expand the Blue Bloods universe. CBS had announced the spin-off project earlier this year, a few months after the original series ended its 14-season run in December 2024.

Besides Donnie Wahlberg reprising his role in Blue Bloods as NYPD Officer Danny Reagan, the CBS series has already announced that Ernie Hudson, Maggie Lawson, and Sonequa Martin-Green will be part of the project.

The showrunners will be Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, who had earlier worked collectively in The Blacklist, LA's Finest, SWAT, Accused, and Alert: Missing Persons Unit. And, as the title implies, the setting will move from the original series' Big Apple to Boston.

Gloria Reuben will play the Silver matriarch in Boston Blue

Along with her casting news, Gloria Reuben's character in Boston Blue has also been unveiled. Per Deadline, which shared the exclusive news of her joining the series, she will play Mae Silver. She's the District Attorney in Boston and the matriarch of the Silver family, which is mostly composed of law enforcement professionals.

Mae is a widow of a judge, who was murdered on the courthouse steps. Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green), the detective who will be Reagan's partner in Boston PD, is Mae's daughter. She also has a stepdaughter named Sarah (Maggie Lawson), a Police Superintendent.

The spinoff spotlights Reagan's move from the NYPD to the Boston PD and Mae's prominent law enforcement family, which also includes her father, who is a reverend, played by Ernie Hudson. Gloria Reuben's family in the series also includes a son named Jonah, a rookie cop. However, the actor who is going to play Jonah in the spinoff is still unknown.

Boston Blue marks Gloria Reuben's return to the Blue Bloods universe

Gloria Reuben previously joined the cast of Blue Bloods for only two episodes in season 11. However, her character as Mae Silver is a new one because, in the original series, she played the character of Rachel Weber, an ATF special agent in charge of an undercover operation.

Reuben also starred in the CBS hit legal drama Elsbeth as Claudia Payne. Her other works on TV include Mr. Robot, Saints & Sinners, Raising the Bar, The Agency, and ER. She recently appeared in Prime Video's latest electric thriller limited series, The Better Sister, which also featured Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks.

The upcoming series marks her reunion with the showrunners, as she previously guest-starred on The Blacklist. It will also be the second time for Reuben and Martin-Green to play a mother-daughter duo, with the first one being the 2024 dark comedy movie, My Dead Friend Zoe.

When is Boston Blue going to premiere?

So far, there is no exact release date for the series yet. However, it's been slated for a fall debut, per CBS's fall schedule, as reported by TVLine. It's expected to follow its ancestor, Blue Bloods, and will have a Friday release day at 10 pm Eastern Time or 9:00 pm Central Time.

Like Blue Bloods, Boston Blue will exclusively air on CBS and will be available for streaming one day after its television premiere, only on Paramount+.
