Patrick J. Adams reflected on his time filming the long-running USA Network show Suits, stating that he was depressed at the time. In an interview with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on the Dinner's on Me podcast on Tuesday, November 26, Adams shared:
"I was in the zone of living pretty unexamined life, was pretty miserable... was, I would say, pretty depressed."
In addition to his mental health struggles, the Suits actor revealed that he developed an unhealthy relationship with alcohol during his stint in the series. He said:
"I wasn't taking good care of my mental health, and I was drinking too much come the end of seventh season."
Speaking about his mental health struggles with Modern Family's Ferguson, he suggested that his alcohol problem was largely a way of dealing with the depression, along with spending money. Patrick J. Adams noted that he lacked other tools to manage his feelings.
Adams also acknowledged that he didn't know how to talk about his mental health struggles and did not pursue options like therapy that could have helped him. He added:
"There are all these things that I knew I needed to probably be doing and I wasn't doing."
Patrick J. Adams is well-known for playing Mike Ross, a college dropout turned unlicensed lawyer, in Suits. He left the show in 2018 after completing seven seasons but returned for three episodes in Suits season 9. After leaving Suits, the Canadian-American actor admitted that it took time for him to change his lifestyle, but he eventually stopped drinking.
Patrick J. Adams reveals the reason he decided to stop drinking alcohol
During his interview with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Suits star Patrick J. Adams detailed the "breaking point" that prompted him to start his sobriety journey after leaving the show. He revealed that this decision was largely influenced by his family, especially his kids with actress Troian Bellisario. He said:
"[I was] still trying to live my life as a 25-year-old and doing my patterns of, like, deal with my insecurity and my fears. And they just weren't working. And they were taking a toll on my relationship for sure, but also just making me, like, a very not present father."
That realization helped sober up the actor and jumpstarted his journey to quit drinking. He said:
"That for me was a breaking point when I was like, 'I think I should stop drinking probably, because I don't wanna be that dad.'"
Patrick J. Adams and Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario married in 2016 and have two daughters together, Aurora and Elliot Rowena. Although the actor said that he was "missing it," he told Ferguson that getting sober was "the best thing" he ever did for himself. He added that it was something that he needed to do so he could deal with his other issues.
In the podcast, Adams said that there was no way that he could have taken his mental and physical health seriously if he hadn't stopped drinking. Getting sober was also a catalyst for him to work on his marriage and friendships as well as deal with his "fears and anxiety."
The temptation to get back into his old lifestyle is always in the midst, but the actor said that he only needs to remind himself of his "new beautiful existence" and that people are relying on him, like his two children.
