A brief recap of season 3 episode 7

In episode 7, What is Starfleet?, the Enterprise crew has to make a big moral choice. The episode is all about the Jikaru, a bioluminescent monster that can think and feel. At first, the Enterprise crew has to get the Jikaru to the Lutani system. But they quickly learn that the creature is aware and can make choices.

The crew tries to keep it safe, but the captain of the Jikaru makes the terrible choice to fly into a star and kill it. It cannot take being used as a tool in the war between the Kasar and the Lutani any longer. The crew is deeply affected by the creature's death, which makes them think seriously about how hard their job is.

Beto Ortega, a documentary director, is following the crew's journey and wants to know what Starfleet is for. The crew's goals are shown next to the harsh facts they have to deal with. This makes people question the morality of the organization.

Even though the documentary is critical, Beto's view changes over time, and he comes to understand that Starfleet's purpose is not set by its rules, but by the people who work there.
