Joseph Ferlazzo is currently serving a sentence of 42.5 years to life for murdering his wife, Emily Schwarz Ferlazzo. A tattoo artist from New Hampshire, Joseph, was found guilty of first-degree murder by a Vermont jury in December 2024.

He was convicted despite asserting that he had acted in self-defence. The tragic incident unfolded during their anniversary trip in Bolton, Vermont, in October 2021.

Emily Ferlazzo was shot twice in the head by Joseph Ferlazzo after tensions between them spiraled out of control. He then proceeded to dismember her body and hide the remains inside their camper.

Prosecutors noted a troubling history of domestic violence in their marriage. They emphasized Joseph's calculated efforts to conceal the crime for several days after Emily went missing.

Joseph Ferlazzo is currently serving a prison sentence of 42.5 years to life in Vermont for the murder of his wife, Emily Schwarz Ferlazzo. The jury in Chittenden County Superior Criminal Court, Vermont, convicted Joseph of first-degree murder in December 2024, after rejecting his claims of self-defence.

Emily’s tragic death occurred during the couple’s anniversary trip to Bolton, Vermont, in October 2021, marking one year of their marriage as per a Court TV report dated April 24, 2025.

Initially, Joseph claimed Emily had disappeared following an argument. He later confessed that during their altercation inside the camper, Emily threatened him with a handgun, prompting him to use his Glock firearm in response.

However, prosecutors pointed to inconsistencies and evidence suggesting premeditation. During cross-examination, Deputy State’s Attorney Sally Adams confronted Joseph Ferlazzo directly about his credibility. Sally Adams accused him of lying repeatedly about the circumstances surrounding Emily’s disappearance and death.

On October 16, 2021, Ferlazzo shot Emily twice in the head, and then he dismembered her body inside their camper. He concealed her remains in garbage bags, which were discovered by authorities days later.

Joseph initially denied involvement, telling Emily’s parents she had walked off after their argument. However, his deceptive behavior during the search raised suspicion, leading authorities to investigate his actions and statements closely.

Emily’s family, especially her mother, Adrienne Bass, noted troubling signs before the couple's trip. Bass told Fox News Digital, dated June 7, 2025:

"I interpreted his shivering and shaking as if he’d been cold because he was riding his motorcycle from Vermont to New Hampshire. It was a three-hour drive in the middle of October."

She added:

"But thinking back on it now, I think he was probably having anxiety lying to our faces"

The sentencing of Joseph Ferlazzo

After the jury found him guilty, Joseph Ferlazzo stood before Judge John Pacht, who handed down a sentence of 42.5 years to life on April 24, 2025. In court, friends and family of Emily Ferlazzo shared memories and grief, describing the devastating loss of a young nurse as per the Court TV report dated April 24, 2025.

"A mother, an auntie, a grandmother, a best friend: the labels she was denied the day she was murdered," Emily's mother said.

Prosecutors emphasized that they believed Joseph had allegedly acted with intent and spent days trying to hide what he had done. Today, Joseph is locked away in a Vermont state prison. He will not be eligible for parole until he serves the full minimum term.
