Gilmore Girls, a beloved television series created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, originally aired from 2000 to 2007 and continues to captivate the hearts of fans with its much-loved mother-daughter duo. However, the show was canceled and as per Variety, money played a key role in this decision. The publication stated that the parties involved reportedly struggled to reach a deal regarding the salaries of the lead actors.

Debuting on October 5, 2000, the title became the flagship series for The WB network. The show follows Lorelai, played by Lauren Graham, a fiercely independent single mother who leaves her wealthy traditional family as a teenager to raise Rory, portrayed by Alexis Bledel, on her own. Despite their age difference, Lorelai and Rory share a close bond and navigate through life together.

Following its cancellation, the show starring Graham, Bledel, Scott Paterson, and Kelly Bishop returned one last time as a miniseries, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on Netflix.

Set in the charming fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, the show won the hearts of viewers worldwide. However, the CW and Warner Bros. TV decided to halt the show.

Back in 2007, Variety reported that money was the key factor behind this decision. While the parties involved struggled to reach a deal on salaries, the publication also reported that there were allegedly disagreements about the total number of episodes and production dates.

CW President Dawn Ostroff shed light on the sudden cancellation of the show and told Variety that it was a "hard decision."

"It was such a hard decision. Everyone came to the point where we decided it was just time to move on. But I think everybody is walking away with good feelings. We all tried to make it work," they said.

The lead star Lauren Graham appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2015 and said that the show's ending caught her by surprise. She stated that the cast and crew never got a chance to have a wrap party and recalled how she found out about the cancellation. She mentioned she was in a restaurant at the time and had turned her phone off.

"So the waiter comes to the table and he was like 'Are you Lauren Graham?' and I was like, 'Yes.' He goes 'Your agent's on the phone.' I thought I was in a '40s movie or something. I was walking to the house phone and I was like 'Hello,' and he goes 'It's cancelled.' And that's how I found out that it was the end," she said.

Throughout the series, Lorelai navigates her complicated dynamic with her overbearing parents, Emily and Richard Gilmore, portrayed by Kelly Bishop and Edward Herrmann, respectively. Meanwhile, Rory experiences the trials and tribulations of adolescence as she navigates through friendships and love.

In the final episode of the original show, which aired in May 2007, fans see Yale graduate Rory seeking a job as a journalist, after turning down Logan's marriage proposal. She gets a job as a reporter but has to leave to follow Barack Obama's campaign.

Meanwhile, Luke plans a surprise party at the town square, where everyone in Stars Hollow gathers to send Rory off. Luke congratulates Lorelai on her accomplishments as a mother and the latter hints at keeping the tradition of 'Friday night dinner' alive with her parents.

In 2016, the original cast and Amy Sherman-Palladino returned for the four-part miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

Throughout its run, the series captivated audiences with its witty plots, heartwarming moments, and relatable characters. From Lorelai's tumultuous love life to Rory's academic pursuits and Lane Kim's struggles with her traditional mother, the show struck a chord with viewers of all ages.

All seven seasons of Gilmore Girls and the subsequent miniseries are available to stream on Netflix.
