There has been a lot of discussion surrounding the 'Rookie of The Year' race between Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky's Angel Reese. The debate further intensified when WNBA analyst Monica McNutt argued that a team's standing in the league is a huge factor from her perspective.

Given her stance on the matter, she has Reese winning the award. This opinion resulted in split reactions from fans.

The two currently play for struggling ball clubs who are fighting their way towards securing a spot in the playoffs. Aside from their teams' standings, they play two different positions with different responsibilities placed on their shoulders.

With how their production has been impressive in their rookie campaigns, it's not surprising that the race is highly close at this point.

McNutt shared her comments in an appearance on ESPN's 'Get Up'. The clip was also uploaded on X.

"My rookie of the year is going to [be] based on the standings because I think that is how you have the opportunity to measure impact," McNutt said. "... And the Sky right now are in the playoffs. So you'd have to give the nod in my mind to Angel Reese."

Following the post, several WNBA fans shared their mixed reactions to the subject matter at hand.

"LeBron x Melo rookie years come to mind. Check it out, Joe. Similar situation."

X user Aidan LaPorta (@AidanLaPorta69) highlighted that McNutt's point falters when it's taken into consideration how close Indiana and Chicago are in the standings.

"The Sky picked eighth last year while the Fever had the first pick. Yet, they're only half a game above the Fever right now. How would that be her making more impact?" the fan posted.
"So what about head to head wins? Because it's 2-1 Indiana. Standings have nothing to do with an individual player and everything to do with the whole team. They have their minds made up. Stats don't matter to these people," this fan pointed out.

"... I don't think it's open and shut. Angel is key to the upward trajectory to the Sky. Once Boston and Mitchell started playing better, the Fever started playing better. Also, the Fever had two All-Stars last year. Do the Sky have one?" this fan wrote.
"...The Sky are dead last in FG% and 3pt FG%. What the f**k does them having the first pick last season have to do with the Fever clearly having better players and roster construction. Angel is a post-playing PF surrounded by a post-playing C, a SG and a PG who shoots 20% from three and Mabrey," another fan said.

Be that as it may, there are still a couple more games on this season's schedule before a ROTY winner is determined.

Angel Reese talked about on-court rivalry with Caitlin Clark

During an interview with Women's Health's Sydney Wingfield and Jacqueline Tempera on June 4, Angel Reese highlighted the competitive dynamic she has with Caitlin Clark.

"I love that we're able to compete and still be cool after," Reese said, "regardless of the outside noise. When we get between the lines and we're ready to compete, we just want to win. That's just the group of women — we always want to win, and we're strong and super powerful in everything that we do."

In sports, the best kind of respect two opponents can direct to one another is to compete at the highest level possible to bring the best out of each other. Reese highlighted that it's all about excellent sportsmanship at the end of the day when it comes to her and Clark.
