Simone Biles is making waves at the 2024 Paris Olympics and has drawn comparisons to what WNBA rookie phenom Caitlin Clark is doing. Among those who served to highlight this was Barstool podcaster Mark Titus, following another gold medal performance from the American gymnastics superstar.
The Mostly Sports host made the bold claim on X, formerly known as "Twitter," drawing parallelism between the two popular women athletes. He wrote:
"Simon Biles is officially the Caitlin Clark of gymnastics."
Biles on Tuesday became the most decorated American Olympic gymnast of all time by winning her fifth gold medal, taking her overall record to eight, including one silver and two bronze. She broke a tie with Shannon Miller, who won seven medals for the U.S. during her Olympic tours of duty.
The presence of Biles at the Games has also added to the draw that gymnastics is getting from fans and viewers, similar to what many give credit to Caitlin Clark for doing in the WNBA.
The top overall pick in this year's WNBA draft, Clark has made the Indiana Fever among the popular teams in the WNBA right now. In games that she has been part of, turnout at the venues and viewership have shown significant spikes from previous years.
Caitlin Clark leads the Fever (11-15) in both scoring and assists with 17.1 points and 8.2 assists (league-high), to go along with 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 36 minutes of play.
Caitlin Clark hopes to be part of the U.S. women's Olympic team in the future
Caitlin Clark would have loved to have been part of the U.S. women's basketball team, seeing action in the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympic Games. But she understands that it is a process and remains hopeful of making the team at some point in the future.
Speaking to reporters back in June, the former Iowa standout shared her thoughts on not making the 12-woman U.S. Olympic squad. She said, by way of NBC News:
"I'm excited for the girls that are on the team. I know it's the most competitive team in the world and I know it could've gone either way of me being on the team, me not being on the team."
Caitlin Clark added:
"I'm gonna be rooting them on to win gold... Honestly, no disappointment. I think it just gives you something to work for. That's a dream. Hopefully one day I can be there..."
Named to the U.S. national women's basketball squad are A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray (Las Vegas), Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu (New York), Naphessa Collier (Minnesota), Kahleah Cooper, Diana Taurasi and Brittney Grinner (Phoenix), Jewell Loyd (Seattle) and Alyssa Thomas (Connecticut).
The team currently has a 1-0 record in the Paris Games after defeating Japan, 102-76, on July 30 in a Group C match. It next plays against Belgium on Aug. 2.
