Brock Lesnar’s famous WWE Championship reign in 2003 encountered a major threat in the form of Chris Benoit. On the Smackdown show on December 4, 2003, at San Jose, California, Chris Benoit defeated John Cena to earn the right to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship. Brock had been holding the title for months and had overcome numerous challengers during the course of his reign. He was brash as he continued to back his claim as the greatest WWE Champion ever. His match with Benoit was a classic. Both men were unwilling to give up which led to more number of near falls. Brock Lesnar nearly gave up after Benoit locked in the crippler crossface. But he withstood the pain and lock Benoit in his leg lock. Though Benoit did not tap out, the referee deemed him unconscious and awarded the victory to the champion, Brock Lesnar.
