Stats: Australia become first team to score 1000 individual centuries

The first day of the second Test between Australia and West Indies followed a familiar pattern. Australia batted and batted and batted as West Indies’ bowlers struggled to break through on a good batting wicket at MCG.

In the course of their innings, Australia made history, as they became the first country to score 1000 individual hundreds in international cricket. Centuries from Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja in the space of a few balls ensured Australia created history.

Despite having just two players in the list of top ten Test century makers, Australia still hold a comfortable advantage over England, who are in second place with 964 centuries across all three formats.

With 41 tons, Ricky Ponting has the most Test centuries for Australia. The right-hander also leads the list for most ODI tons for his country, with 30 centuries, while Aaron Finch is the only australian to score a century in T20Is.

Despite having no player in the top ten in the list of most Test tons, England are comfortably clear of the third-placed side, in terms of most international hundreds. Captain Alastair Cook has the most Test tons, with 28, while Marcus Trescothick holds the record for most ODI tons by an Englishman, despite having just 12 hundreds to his name. In T20Is, Alex Hales is the only English batter to have made a century.

In third place is India, who have 688 centuries, the latest of which, came from Ajinkya Rahane in the final Test against South Africa in Delhi. Leading the list for most centuries for ODIs and Tests is unsurprisingly, India's leading run-scorer in both formats, Sachin Tendulkar.

Sachin, who has more international runs across all formats than any other player, also holds the record for most Test tons (51) and ODI centuries with 49. Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma are the only Indians to have made a century in the shortest format of the game.

59 centuries behind India, in fourth place is West Indies. Although a shadow of their former selves currently, the Windies still have more centuries in international cricket than all but three nations, although they are unlikely move up any further on this list. Rounding out the top five is Pakistan, with 543 centuries.
