Can there be a Torres and Falcao swap deal?

It would be massive, wouldn’t it? Imagine if we heard news this summer that Fernando Torres and Radamel Falcao are to swap clubs, signalling an emotional return to his boyhood club for one this summer, and a remarkable coup for Chelsea!

There are a number of things to consider here. Torres and his thoughts about his future needs to be resolved. When I say that, I am talking about the club taking a stance with him for the first time. Torres has had his problems here, of which we are all aware, but this season, despite the fact he has scored 15 goals already in all competitions, he has scored only once in thirteen games and it’s not good enough.

He looks like a player who is short on confidence in front of goal, and all this talk about blaming it on other players and the manager has to stop at the end of the season. Torres needs to sort his head out and either be focused and committed to the Chelsea cause, giving it his everything, or he needs to decide, if the opportunity comes about, if he wants to return to Atletico Madrid.

Torres has made no secret of his desire to return to Madrid to finish his career, and I just wonder, with all the goings on he has had here, whether he would, if given the opportunity, draw a line under his time here and move on.

Another factor would be Radamel Falcao’s desire to come to Chelsea. You have to imagine the situation with the manager and who comes in next would play a big part in any talk of a deal. We would need to establish his willingness to come to the Premier League and to try his luck here.

The thing is, with someone who has the natural instincts in front of goal that he has, you would imagine he would have little problems in adapting to the pace of the game here and our league.

If Chelsea could convince him to come here, it would be massive for everyone concerned. It has the potential to be one of the most important signings of recent seasons in my view.

The final factor to consider is other clubs such as Manchester City, Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich.

If reports are to be believed, Pep Guardiola will have a huge amount of money being made available to him this summer to rebuild the German side into his mould. Having first hand experience of Falcao in La Liga, you would imagine Guardiola would be more than interested if he was to be made available. That’s when you have to worry because, if it came to a bidding war, Chelsea would lose out if Bayern’s £200m transfer kitty that has been reported is true. You would also feel that Falcao would find it hard to resist Guardiola.

Then there is Manchester City and the fact that Mario Balotelli has been sold. You have to imagine that Mancini wouldn’t have agreed to sell him unless they have a target in mind to replace him in the summer. Again, if City came calling and offered ridiculous wages and a chance to link up with Aguero, would Falcao turn it down?

Finally, there is Carlo’s PSG. I say Carlo Ancelotti at the moment, but whether he is there in the summer is another thing, with reports that Real Madrid are interested. PSG have money to burn also and are prepared to pay big wages. With some big name players already there, could Falcao fancy a move to France instead?

There are many things to consider before anything is done and dusted, but you would imagine that if Chelsea are to get a deal done with Atletico, it will involve a player swap deal with either Torres and/or Courtois being involved.

These next few months are massive for Chelsea, and where we finish in the Premier League will have a major bearing on any future transfer deals being done. If we are to convince Falcao to sign for Chelsea, we need to be in the Champions League. Anything else is a disaster.
