Sunderland and England midfielder Jack Rodwell had 50 injections in a time span of just five days to regain his fitness at the Stadium of Light. Rodwell has been hampered by injuries since arriving from Manchester City last season, only managing three Premier League starts this season.

The midfielders latest injury saw him him travel to Germany for treatment with former Bayern Munich club doctor Dr Hans Muller Wolfhart, who famously resigned after public criticism from Pep Guardiola. The German’s ‘unique’ methods may be Rodwell’s last hope to resurrect a once promising career hampered by injuries.

In an interview the Englishman said "I flew to see him in Munich. I was there from Monday to Friday morning and had about 50 injections over that time. He injects and injects.”

"There's a lot of anti-inflammatories and lubricants for the joints, it's all technical stuff, the physios know more than me.”

"I just go along with it, and I'll do anything to stay fit. There's nothing major, it's just niggling injuries, but I don't want it to continue. When you're out for a week here and there, it sets you back and you're out of the team."

Sunderland need all hands on deck to recover

Rodwell will be hoping to recover his fitness before this weekend. Sunderland, who are currently 19th in the League table and two points adrift of safety travel to London to face defending champions and fellow Premier League strugglers Chelsea on Saturday.

The 24 year old midfielder completed his £10m move to Wearside after agreeing a five-year deal following an injury infected two years at the Etihad Stadium. He has scored 3 goals in 23 Premier League appearances last season with 84 percent pass accuracy.

The powerful midfielder was once ranked among the most promising youngsters in the country following his emergence from Everton’s academy. After joining City for £12m in 2012 his career took a nosedive.

Notwithstanding the fact that Rodwell’s progress was blocked mainly by the presence of midfielders such as Yaya Touré in the first team, he was troubled by the recurring hamstring troubles which had first begun appearing in his Goodison Park days. He started only seven Premier League games for City. In total he made 26 first team appearances, scoring only twice.
