Sunderland are reported to be in for current Liverpool striker, Daniel Sturridge. According to reports in the Sunderland Echo, David Moyes, the current manager is a huge fan of the striker and is considering a move in January.

Sturridge, whose position as a regular starter has been in jeopardy since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, has at times aired his frustration in public, which has caused some friction between the coach and the player.

However, Moyes is keen on bringing the injury-prone striker to the Stadium of Light to shore up his side’s attack.

Sturridge is yet to score this season in the league, although Liverpool have scored 16 goals this season. The variety of options in the current Liverpool squad has meant that the Englishman is not guaranteed a starting place anymore.

Relations have been further strained between the player and coach due to Sturridge’s recurring injury issues.

Sunderland poor in front of goal

Sunderland, on the other hand, are in need of strikers. The side has been heavily reliant on 33-year-old Jermain Defoe, who has reposed the faith put on him by his boss, by scoring 4 of the 5 goals scored by the team so far.

But Moyes is well aware of the pitfalls of over-reliance on a single striker and the arrival of Sturridge will be a welcome addition to the squad.

The 27-year-old is considered one of the finest natural finishers in the Premier League, but “attitude issues” have constantly surrounded the striker since his days at Manchester City, Chelsea and now Liverpool.

Need firepower to escape relegation

Sunderland has been embroiled in relegation battles for the past few seasons and this season has been no different. Sunderland is currently bottom of the Premier League, with a single point from half a dozen games, and the latest injury to winger Adnan Januzaj at the weekend is another blow to their survival hopes.

Sunderland lost 2-3 at the weekend against Crystal Palace.

Moyes took over in the summer from Sam Allardyce and has inherited a squad with depleted attacking options. If the Liverpool man does arrive at Tyneside, it will be considered somewhat of a coup for the struggling side.

Sunderland play at home against West Bromwich on Saturday and will hope to register their first victory in the Premier League this campaign.
