Sunderland vs Newcastle United: Player ratings

Fabio Borini stats

Sunderland

Keiren Westwood (-14)

Looked very comfortable in goal as Newcastle’s forwards failed to test him regularly, with only two saves to make.

Phil Bardsley (9)

Snapped away at Newcastle’s attackers, completing all six of his tackles and winning four of six headed duels.

Andrea Dossena (-31)

A poor debut from the former Liverpool man, failing to make a single tackle or clearance all game, and at fault for Newcastle’s equaliser.

John O’Shea (19)

Struggled throughout, having failed to win a single header all game but did complete 96 per cent of his passes.

Sunderland stats

Carlos Cuellar (4)

More assured than his partner, he won two headed duels and made nine clearances.

Lee Cattermole (14)

A typically industrious display as he prevented Cabaye et al from playing their usual game, and suprisingly for his short stature, won all four of his headers.

Jack Colback (32)

An energetic performance from the youngster as he harried the opposing midfielders with a 100 per cent tackle success rate and 87 per cent pass accuracy.

Sebastian Larsson (-3)

Failed to make an impact in a rather anonymous display, completing 70 per cent of his passes.

Adam Johnson (-2)

A very lively performance and an excellent assist for Fletcher’s goal, but he was wasteful at times with just two crosses out of eight reaching their target.

Sunderland stats

Jozy Altidore (12)

Several good touches but didn’t get the service he needed with no attempts at goal, although he did winfour of six headed duels.

Steven Fletcher (22)

A crashing header to put Sunderland into the lead, the striker was poor otherwise with only five out of 15 headed duels.

Subs:

Fabio Borini (41)

Provided the winning goal with a scorching strike in the dying stages of the game.

Sung-Yeung Ki (3)

Very tidy when he came on, with all ten passes made for a 100 per cent pass completion rate.

Ondrej Celustka (-2)

Brought on to shore up the defence, he won his only tackle.

Newcastle:

Tim Krul (-46)

Didn’t do much throughout, with just two saves to his name.

Mathieu Debuchy (31)

Stole in at the back to tuck home the equaliser, the full-back won five headed duels and made seven clearances.

Mike Williamson (-2)

Aerially dominant, with seven out of 11 headed duels and eight clearances.

Paul Dummett (1)

Out-jumped by Fletcher for the goal, the youngster was shaky throughout but he did make seven clearances.

Davide Santon (26)

A decent showing with two headed duel wins and six clearances.

Moussa Sissoko (-7)

Tried to play his usual game but found it tough going, losing all six of his headed duels. Replaced by Cisse at half-time.

Cheick Tiote (29)

Competed well with the Sunderland midfield with a 100 per cent tackle success rate.

Yohan Cabaye (2)

Failed to impose himself on Sunderland with just 68 per cent of his passes reaching a team-mate.

Yoan Gouffran (6)

Won five headed duels but failed to register an impact otherwise.

Hatem Ben Arfa (24)

A few wayward shots, the Frenchman was in poor form in front of goal with none of his four shots hitting the target.

Sunderland stats

Loic Remy (-7)

A shocking afternoon for the striker, with no shots attempted.

Subs:

Papiss Cisse (-15)

Did little to change the course of the game.

Shola Ameobi (0)

A swerving shot flashed just wide of Westwood’s post, but otherwise ineffectual.

Sammy Ameobi (6)

Didn’t have time to make an impression.
