5 booking options for John Cena after No Mercy

WWE have a number of options when it comes to John Cena's inevitable WWE return

WWE has a number of options when it comes to John Cena's inevitable return to it. Cena was defeated by Roman Reigns at No Mercy last month and following the match, he seemingly said goodbye to the WWE Universe as he set off on another lengthy hiatus from wrestling to film his scenes in the new Transformers movie.

Despite this, it seems that Cena will indeed be returning to WWE in the distant future since he stated "If they want me, I will return" on the Raw Talk that followed No Mercy.

John Cena only returns to WWE now to "put over" younger stars since he is aware that now he has reached the point in his career where he needs to help ensure that the company is left in good hands when he retires just like many WWE legends did the same for Cena when he was coming through the ranks.

But what options do WWE have for John Cena when he finally makes his return to WWE?

5. Commissioner of SmackDown Live

SmackDown Live is definitely in need of a shake-up following Hell in a Cell this weekend, and given how personal the match between Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon has become, it's obvious that one man will be forced to leave the brand following their showdown.

If McMahon was the one who was forced to leave, then it would mean that WWE will have a vacant spot for the Commissioner, a spot that Cena could easily fill if he wanted to be able to come and go from WWE as he pleases.

SmackDown definitely needs new blood. Shane McMahon's era has lasted now for more than a year and bringing in a 16-time Champion like John Cena to run the show for a few months could be an interesting turn of events heading towards the Survivor Series.

4. Grand Slam Champion

Dean Ambrose became the youngest ever Grand Slam Champion back at SummerSlam in August when he won the Tag Team Championship for the first time alongside his former Shield stable mate Seth Rollins.

Despite spending 15 years at the top of WWE's programming, John Cena has never been able to lift the Intercontinental Championship.

The Miz currently holds the Championship but could lose the title to Roman Reigns at TLC later this month if their match is a Championship decider. Reigns would then also become a Grand Slam Champion before Cena, which would give the 16-time World Champion enough of a reason to want to return and challenge the Champion at the time for the right to make the history and finally win the Championship that has always eluded him.

3. That long-awaited heel turn

John Cena Could Finally Turn Heel

John Cena has taken a number of lengthy breaks from WWE over the past few years but always returned to the company to continue to put over new talent.

The problem is that eventually WWE will run out of heel superstars and Cena will then be given the opportunity to finally turn heel. There will come a point where John Cena's merchandise sales and the number of make-a-wish children that he meets will lessen as newer stars are born in the company.

Cena would then be free to finally play around with a heel character and do something in WWE that he has never been able to do. It would be interesting to see if Cena played the heel role in a feud against The Undertaker, if WWE still wanted that to go ahead, or if the feud would be played in a manner similar to the recent Roman Reigns saga.

2. 17-time World Champion

Jinder Mahal shocked the world back at Backlash when he defeated Randy Orton to claim the WWE Championship. Ever since then the former 3MB member has been able to successfully defend the Championship against the threats of both Baron Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura.

Mahal faced Nakamura once again at Hell in a Cell and it's thought that if Mahal is able to find a way past The Artist once again, then it would take someone like John Cena to step up and finally defeat Mahal and take away the Championship. Even if Jinder isn't the star with the Championship at the time, Cena has already shown that he can put on a five-star match against Nakamura if it comes down to it.

It's obvious that WWE will want to give John Cena the record-setting 17th Championship before he decides to walk away from WWE, it would also be a great way to ensure that Cena would want to return to the company in the future if they were offering him another chance to make history.

1.One final WrestleMania main event

John Cena was originally supposed to return to face The Undertaker back at WrestleMania 32. However, when he wasn't cleared in time, Shane McMahon was called in to take his place.

There were rumours that WWE was planning for the much-anticipated match to take place at this year's Survivor Series instead so that The Undertaker could walk away at the event he first debuted at 27 years ago.

WWE will want this match to take place in the future and since rumours suggest that Undertaker is preparing himself for a return to the ring following his hip surgery.

A match against John Cena would be a perfect one for The Phenom to go out on, and the WWE Universe will finally be given the nostalgic match they have been pining for.
