Satire: Wrestling not an Olympic sport: Inside story

Olympics Day 13 - Wrestling

One of the most ancient Olympic sports, and a tradition in many countries including ours, we have all grown up watching wrestling. Whether it is amateur wrestling or pro, we have all heard about the fables and the legends. From the Dara Singhs to the Khalis, our country has seen and contributed to the sport, and when you visit the villages, more often than not, you will come across ‘pehelwans’ or the body builders, going against each other, tackling the other guys and pinning their shoulder down. It is almost a tradition to have a pehelwan training ground in every village, and whether you see them flexing or lifting the other guys up, you are left amazed at how much effort they put in day in and day out.

When it comes to the more ‘flashy’ and outlandish part of it, the so called ‘sport’ has been glorified and modified into something we know as ‘Professional Wrestling’. So with all of these modernizations and fragmentations, it is no surprise that wrestling has been one of the most popular sports even in the Olympics, being one of the oldest at that. Whether it is the free style part or the Greco Roman, wrestling has been an integral sport in the Olympics for the majority of its span. But with the recent news that wrestling won’t be a part of the Olympics anymore from 2020 Summer games, many have come out outraged by the decision, while some have started the blame game.

It is no surprise that people have pointed fingers at pro wrestling for this debacle. After all, you have taken the purest form of the sport and have changed it, morphed it into something that isn’t believable, but successful enough to gain millions as its fan base. Absurdly, it is the scripted form that has gathered more revenues and sales than the original form has since the days of the Roman duels in the Colosseum. With all this said and done, most of the pundits and researchers have come up with their own conclusions and opinions, about why the Olympic committee has decided to ban wrestling at the biggest stage in sporting history.

Reason 5: Rock winning the WWE title after coming back

The fifth and the most astounding ‘opinion’ given by the so called pundits, was that the IOC was left fuming after Dwayne Johnson won the WWE title after 10 long years, the first PPV he battled for the WWE title in a decade. According to one spokesperson, it made ‘no sense’ for a Hollywood actor to come back and win the WWE title against the top guy in the company. It was quoted that ‘WWE made fake wrestling look more fake’, thus starting a never ending loop of fakeness, which was as bad as the doping accusations in other sports. In other reports, Dwayne maybe on steroids, which might also have contributed to this decision, with one person in the committee stating ‘He looks like a Brahma bull!’.

Reason 4: Pro wrestlers trying for Olympics

Recently, the pro wrestling world was abuzz with the rumours that Kurt Angle, the former Olympic gold medallist, was trying to make a comeback into the American Olympic squad of wrestlers. It was also at this point that Kurt was arrested for DUIs and DWIs, which might not have anything to do with the Olympic training (or the fact that his wife divorced him and married another pro wrestler). This followed the high profile rumour of Kurt going into MMA and signing with UFC. It has been rumoured that one of the members got frustrated and said, ‘This bald guy is nuts!’ It was reported that things escalated after Hogan claimed he wants to win the TNA World title. ‘It is the end of wrestling’, one person claimed. ‘We can’t do anything, brothers.’

Reason 3: Drugs in pro Wrestling

With the Olympic committee going all out in their efforts to stop the drug usage in sports, pro wrestling might have not done themselves a favour when Jeff Hardy went on live PPV high as a Mexican rat on cottage cheese. After the 90 second fiasco, the wrestling fans voiced their disgust and termed Jeff Hardy an outcast. But as it is in the world of pro wrestling, it happened to be a swerve, as Jeff, who was booed for doing drugs as a bad guy, was welcomed back as a good guy, and is now the TNA World Champion. Furthermore, as it is seen in recent episodes of TNA, we can hear what is going inside the head of Jeff Hardy. According to one of the pundits, one inside source claimed it to be ‘screwing with my head’, and that ‘The painted man has done so much drugs, that he has achieved a spiritual high, to talk without his lips moving’. In other news, the source might have just been a druggie pretending to be from the committee.

Reason 2: Olympic committee being headed by Vince Russo

This is one of the most outrageous scenarios given by the pundits, who by this time might not have been in their right minds. They claim that an inside source, who cannot be named at the moment, has revealed that former WCW and TNA head booker, Vince Russo, might be involved in the decision taken by the I.O.C, which will eventually be over turned in a shocking revelation angle, and wrestling will be ‘reinstated’ as a sport. We can now confirm that the pundits are members of the infamous IWC.

Reason 1: Spoiled sport in pro wrestling

The most common answer given by the pundits, however, was in unison, when they claimed that the illegal tactics used in pro wrestling formed the primary reason for the dropping of wrestling as a whole, claiming that it was a ‘bad influence’ on the youngsters, who keep looking for the guy in red to low blow the guy in blue and then pose on top of him. When the media decided to find if the claims against the pro wrestlers were true, former WWE superstar Gene Snitsky said “It wasn’t my fault”.
