Six insults the WWE Universe adopted from WWE Superstars

Austin sold the “What!?” phrase into a love/hate chant for the fans

Over the years when WWE Superstars go toe to toe with one another verbally, sometimes a phrase is shouted and the fans eat it up. Before you know it, it’s becomes a trend to say the least, and it becomes a part of the opposing superstar.

Perhaps one of the greatest insults came from Edge, who brilliantly put Kurt Angle’s music and the phrase “you suck” together, and boom you have an instant and classic chant for the WWE Universe to chant along to. In fact, do you remember when Angle came back from injury and he missed it so much that he got the crowd to chant “you suck” along with his song (he was a face at that time)?

In addition, if the insults are really a hit, fans waste no time into creating memes of their own to share on social media. It’s something more to look forward to after Raw or a PPV. So it goes to show that the insults go beyond chanting at the arenas. Memes are like a new way of saying a jab made it with the WWE Universe.

Some chants last a lifetime while others don’t last nearly a quarter of that. But at the time they were fun and fans are there to have fun at the shows. So when a Superstar says something catchy and a chant comes out of it? Mission accomplished. The WWE Universe is easily entertained, and the more fun they have, the better it is for everyone.

Here is a mix of classic and newer insults the fans adopted and uses at every opportunity.

AJ Styles gets ridiculed for his hairstyle often.

6. “Soccer Mom”

This past Sunday at WWE Battleground, Enzo Amore effortlessly took a shot at AJ Styles by saying that he had “Soccer Mom” hair. He then used the insult to describe him and The Club, as they were his kids (loading them up in the van, etc.).

It’s nothing new; others have taken similar jabs in the past, with Styles even joking about his hairstyle on Twitter. But that night it caught on, and fans were chanting it during the match up.

Amore took it a step further by posting a meme on Instagram of The Club’s faces tacked on to a picture of a mom and her kids. Maybe it wasn’t the send-off Styles was looking forward to now that The Club has been separated due to the WWE brand extension.

The similarities between Ryback and Goldberg earned Ryback a “Goldberg” chant

5. “Goldberg”

Now, we are not talking about the late 1990’s version of the chant, where WCW fans chanted Bill Goldberg’s name as he decimated his opponent. This was directed at Ryback, who fans felt was a carbon copy of the popular Superstar.

Ryback’s look and wrestling style was very similar to Goldberg which fans didn’t waste time putting two and two together. Maybe it’s not really an insult, but it didn’t stop the fans from using it every chance they got since Ryback first came onto the scene.

Rollins’ entitled attitude after winning the WWE Championship earned him a embarrassing nickname

4. “Justin Beiber”

Of all WWE Superstars, Kane insulted Seth Rollins back in 2015 by saying that Rollins was the Justin Beiber of WWE. After Rollins’ title win, his ego swelled and it caused tension within the Authority even more.

The “You Sold Out” chants were wearing thin, so there was no better time than to come up with an insulting chant to go with it. “Justin Beiber” served just that. Maybe it didn’t make that much sense, but it was fun watching Rollins get agitated at the insult.

Stephanie McMahon was one of many WWE personalities who sang this classic tune

3. “Na Na Na Na, Hey, Hey, Goodbye!”

One of the more classic chants is the popular oldies song that is used every time a heel has been fired or leaves against their will. Many Superstars have used it over the years and while most of them are not in tune, it doesn’t stop the fans from having fun rubbing the saying in the latter’s faces. It’s pretty much a given that fans will sing the song every time a Superstar is fired.

The Rock was as best as they come when it comes to phrases and chants

2. “Fruity Pebbles”

The Rock has endless quotes that have turned into chants. Most of the time The Rock can quip a line and the fans instantly pick up on it. He is just that good and The Rock has that kind of power. While not all of his quotes last (CM Punk, anyone?), most of them do stand the test of time.

Perhaps one of his most popular ones is “Fruity Pebbles” a shot at John Cena for his bright colored shirts. I mean, it did make sense after all. But the insult turned into something good – Cena ended up being on the box of the popular cereal, which is a good advertisement opportunity for the company.

The “What!?” phenomenon is still heavily influenced today

1. “What!?”

As the case may be, the number one chant that is used as an insult comes from Stone Cold himself. Still heavily used today, fans chant the one word towards anyone who is boring them or is the antagonist.

There are some fans who find it annoying, even the Superstars themselves. But that’s the power of the Rattlesnake, a simple word meant to be a smart comment had fans hooked and it hasn’t stopped since.
