The 29th November 2004 edition of Raw featured a World Heavyweight title match between Triple H, Chris Benoit and Edge. The match would have a controversial finish, with Edge rolling up Benoit for the pin while simultaneously tapping out to the Crippler Crossface.

Raw would end with the match result still undecided. It would take two weeks for the controversy to end when Eric Bischoff announced that the match was a tie. The Champion should have retained in the event of a tie, but since Triple H was not involved in the finish, the Championship was vacated.

The three competitors would be joined by Chris Jericho, Randy Orton and Batista in an Elimination Chamber match at the next PPV to decide a new champion.
