Back in 1997, Shawn Michaels was one of the biggest names in the WWE, and was without doubt one of their best in-ring performers. Michaels was the WWE Champion for majority of 1996, but had lost the title to Psycho Sid at that year’s Survivor Series, amid huge fan backlash.
The Heartbreak-kid was again crowned the Champion at the 1997 Royal Rumble, and he was set to re-ignite his feud with Bret ‘Hitman’ Heart, which would finally lead to a WrestleMania XXIII re-match of last year’s Iron Man match.
However controversially, on the RAW of 13th February, HBK forfeited his title and walked out on WrestleMania. Michaels holding back his tears had delivered a melodramatic promo, where he had claimed that he had “Lost his Smile”.
