When Cody Rhodes made the decision to end his run with the WWE and continue his career on the independent circuit, it came as a surprise to many people.

Cody had been with the company since the beginning of his wrestling career back in 2006 and both, his father Dusty Rhodes and his brother Goldust, had spent the majority of their wrestling careers working for WWE.

As a result, many believed that leaving the largest wrestling company in the world to find his ground in the rough and rugged surface of independent wrestling was a big mistake on Cody's part, and his father and WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes would not have supported his decision.

During a recent interview given to Wrestledelphia Radio, the former intercontinental champion broke this myth and revealed that Dusty himself wanted Cody to ask for his release.

When asked if his dad would have supported the decision to end his stint with the company, Cody revealed that the Hall of Famer actually advised him to request a release following his match against Big Show at WrestleMania 28:

"I know he would have supported it because he told me to ask for my release after WrestleMania 28, I waited until WrestleMania 32 to take his advice. At 28, I recalled particularly, he was unhappy with the direction things were going with me and Big Show, and he just thought that I was so close to the keys to the kingdom, and they were slipping away, that maybe leaving would wake them to the idea that this is somebody who wanted to captain your ship and the way you guys are treating him has pushed him out."

According to the former WWE star, he decided not to act on the advice of his dad at that time because he thought that Dusty was thinking from his heart but later realized that he was right.

"But it seemed at the time like kind of a leopard's play, so it just didn't interest me. I wanted to stick it out, and I always tried to not take Pop's advice, because he's my dad, so the advice always came from that part of his heart, not the businessman part of his mind, but his heart, and actually at the end of my WWE career, he was right that I should have made that decision maybe a little sooner," Cody said.

It should be noted here that Big Show defeated Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 28 to win the prestigious Intercontinental champion. After the match, Cody was part of several other feuds but none of them helped him regain the momentum he had during his stint with Randy Orton and Ted DiBiase as the stable known as The Legacy. He left the company 4 years later back in May this year, due to the lack of meaningful angles and direction.
