Does it really matter who the number one contender is for Nikki Bella’s Divas title as long as the belt is firmly over the shoulder of the current champion? If the WWE has its way, as well as John Cena, Bella will hold on to the gold a little longer.

There are two agendas here, but both are aimed at leaving the strap on the current champion. Both have left me a little more than aggravated at the way the division, which has left me wondering just how bad the WWE wants Bella to hold the record for the longest title reign by a female, or does it want to send a message to AJ Lee after her sudden departure from the company, much like her husband, CM Punk.
According to a story from last week on wrestlinginc.com, John Cena has also been a major player in making sure his girlfriend remains champion. The website, which credited F4WOnline.com with breaking the story, said Cena had been politicking for Bella to remain champion even after it was rumored that Charlotte would win the Divas belt once she made her WWE debut from NXT. Supposedly, Cena had those plans squashed.
Dave Meltzer was asked about the rumors on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio and said he did not know if there was any truth to those rumors but did say Cena's relationship is part of the reason why Nikki is having such a lengthy title reign. He has heard no talk about the Charlotte rumor but added that doesn't mean it didn't happen.
It was also stated that Cena has spoken up in the past when Nikki was set to lose the title but he doesn't know if Cena's done that in the last few weeks.
Politics and WWE are nothing new as wrestlers have fought for their own causes and causes of others for decades. It is not uncommon for family or couples to fight for each other in the battles that are waged backstage. This is just another example.
Now that the Divas division is in more disarray after a so-called “revolution,” it would only seem fitting that there be collusion backstage. I do, however, find irony in the fact that rumors are circulating about Cena’s involvement in keeping his girlfriend at the top of the food chain, while it takes away from the daughter of the man whom he is trying to tie for the most world title reigns ever in the business.
For those who do not know, Charlotte is the daughter of the immortal Ric Flair. It was Flair’s record that Cena could have tied at SummerSlam if not for Jon Stewart and his interference in the title match with Seth Rollins.
Oh, how the wrestling world turns.
The fact the Bellas seem to be at the center of this lack of movement in the division and the lack of leadership from Stephanie McMahon is only making things worse. Win, lose, draw or interference, the divas are in a no-win situation, having to fight for mobility within the WWE and with the fans, who seem like they are being forced to accept a change in something they showed little interest in to begin with. This is not the way it should have gone down.
Lee won the Divas Championship a record-tying three times, her first reign being the longest in the title's history at 295 days. Bella is only weeks away from tying the mark, something I am sure WWE officials are keenly aware of.
