WWE Rumours: Finn Balor injured at SummerSlam

Balor is the WWE Universal Champion.

It looks like former NXT Champion Samoa Joe isn’t the only WWE Superstar who might have been injured this weekend. It is being reported that the brand new WWE Universal Champion, Finn Balor, may have been injured during his championship match with Seth Rollins at SummerSlam last night.

According to PW Insider, Balor was seen wearing a sling on his right arm after SummerSlam. There is concern backstage that the injury is serious and might even need surgery which would put Finn on the shelf for at least a few months. This would cause him to have to drop the title so soon after winning it which would be a disaster, both for WWE and for Balor.

WWE have pushed Balor straight to the top of the card since his main roster last month. He qualified to face Seth Rollins at SummerSlam after winning a fatal-4-way and a subsequent match against Roman Reigns on the same night. He’s the first WWE Superstar ever to win a WWE World Championship on their PPV debut.

If he is injured, then Balor could well lose the WWE Universal Championship on tomorrow’s episode of Monday Night Raw. It wouldn’t be the first time either that the WWE have given a big pay-per-view Championship victory to a Superstar and rescinded the title on the following episode of programming.

Finn Balor is also the longest reigning NXT Champion of all time, his reign clocking in at 292 days. Balor won the NXT Championship at Beast In The East in Japan, the country where he wrestled in before joining NXT, by defeating Kevin Owens. The Ireland native had long been the face of NXT before making his main roster debut in July. Some had speculated that he could have been a surprise debut at the 2016 Royal Rumble. Balor joined NXT in 2014 after 8 years in Japan with New Japan Pro Wrestling. During his time in Japan, he won multiple titles and honours. He’s a 3-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, a 6-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion and a two-time winner of the prestigious Best of Super Juniors tournament.

During his time in Japan, Balor was one of the founding members of the infamous Bullet Club faction from NJPW. Other current WWE wrestlers who are also former Bullet Club members include AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows. There has been speculation since the three of them joined that Finn Balor would form a WWE version of the Bullet Club called Balor Club, but that has not materialized as of now.
