Manchester United set to receive a guard of honour at the Emirates this weekend.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed at a press conference today that his team will give Manchester United a guard of honour when they visit the Emirates this weekend. There was backlash from fans after the news first broke out as soon as United won the title but since then, Wenger has ensured that it will take place and they will ‘respect’ the champions.

Performing a guard of honour for the newly-crowned champions promotes goodwill within the sport and brings about the sense of respect between players. This will be the first time in history of the Premier League that the North London club honour Manchester United. The latter have won their 20th league title and, more importantly, the 13th one under Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, it is worth noting that Arsenal were given the guard of honour by Manchester United in 1991 at Highbury. Other examples of the honour include Everton applauding United in 2003, United doing the same to Chelsea in 2005 and two years later, the other way round. United and Sunderland also performed one in November 2011 commemorating 25 years of SAF management.
