Wolfsburg’s German striker Martina Muller (C) celebrates after she converts a penalty for the opening goal of the UEFA Women’s Champions League final football match between Olympique Lyonnais and Wolfsburg at Stamford Bridge in London on May 23, 2013. German club Wolfsburg ended Lyon’s two-year reign as women’s Champions League holders with a shock 1-0 win.

German club Wolfsburg ended Lyon’s two-year reign as women’s Champions League holders with a shock 1-0 win over the French side in Thursday’s final at Stamford Bridge.

Lyon, who have appeared in the last four Champions League finals, had won 35 of their 36 matches in all competitions this season, securing a seventh consecutive French league title in the process.

But the German champions sprang a major surprise thanks to Martina Muller’s second half penalty.

Muller drove her spot-kick past Sarah Bouhaddi in the 73rd minute after Laura Georges handled in the area.

Ralf Kellermann’s team, who beat Arsenal in the semi-finals, held on through the nervous final minutes to secure their first continental crown and shatter Lyon’s hopes of a record third Champions League title.

Japan international striker Ami Otaki, who had scored one goal in three appearances in the tournament this season, was named on the Lyon bench but never got on the pitch.
