The pro wrestling landscape has improved tremendously with AEW emerging as an alternative to WWE for talents. During the latest episode of The Wrestling Outlaws, Vince Russo and EC3 discussed the state of modern wrestling and claimed most don't understand the fundamentals.
AEW might have faced some setbacks but the company continues to ride on the momentum of a new TV deal and a seemingly stacked roster.
WWE's CM Punk recently drew attention for claiming that he may have wasted some of his AEW matches on wrestlers who probably didn't deserve it. His comments were the main topic on The Wrestling Outlaws, where EC3 also reacted to rumors of AEW stars allegedly not being open to advice from veterans.
EC3 was surprised that younger wrestlers in the company weren't looking for feedback from legends who have spent years as active performers.
A top AEW star has fired back at his critics HERE.
The former WWE star explained:
"I just can't fathom that mindset. I'm not a crazy old-timer screaming at the cloud, I look for feedback from older people as much as possible. Not so much with exactly as they see but to see the mentality and create my own based on it and just listening to people. Like, you don't have to agree with what I'm saying. But just hear them out and it makes you conducive to thinking outside the box." [13:36 - 14:18]
Vince Russo spoke about the overall environment in professional wrestling and feared nearly 80% of the wrestlers have yet to grasp the basics of the art form.
The former WWE writer chimed in:
"Now, I think you need to keep those fundamentals in play and you can evolve from there. I think you have 80% of today's wrestlers who don't understand the fundamentals or that foundation at all. They don't know what they are doing. They don't know how things are done that way." [From 9:27 onwards]
Former WWE writer Vince Russo supports evolution but not at the cost of forgetting the foundation of wrestling
Vince Russo is arguably one of the most vocal analysts and has often complained that current competitors lack elementary knowledge of pro wrestling.
Russo stressed that every talent needed to know about the industry's roots and then start building new ideas. Vince clarified that he wasn't against innovation in professional wrestling but still wanted to see the basics being retained in the current product.
According to Vince, the "rules" that have been followed in wrestling for years remain simplistic for the talents to abide by:
"I think it's a lack of understanding of the absolute roots and foundation of the wrestling business. It's a lack of understanding because, I'm all for evolving things, Chris, but even though you evolve, the foundation needs to remain the same and they were very simplistic, black-and-white rules as they pertain to professional wrestling. The basics, the fundamentals." [8:55 - 9:26]
Despite the apparent issues with how talents approach wrestling these days, a market with WWE, AEW, and many other promotions has ensured that the pro wrestling business remains strong and grows as we near another new year.
