"I'm not scared of dying of a seizure in the ring" - Jon Moxley opens up about his substance abuse issues

Jon Moxley's substance abuse issues have pursued him for years.

Jon Moxley started working on his substance abuse issues in October 2021 and returned to in-ring action a few months later, looking younger and healthier. The star recalled his struggle during a recent interview and noted that the battle is never over.

The Purveyor of Violence notably pulled out of the AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament in 2021 to enroll himself in an inpatient alcohol treatment program. In January 2022, Jon Moxley returned to active competition and soon recaptured the world championship.

During a recent interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Jon Moxley revealed that he felt like he had to compare himself to Kenny Omega upon signing with AEW.

“Four years ago, a lot of people were ready to write me off. A lot of people thought I couldn’t even measure up to Kenny [Omega]. I felt an immense amount of motivation. Kenny has been pushing me since day one in AEW."

The star added that he's in a different space, but that substance abuse issues are never over.

"Now, I’m far better than I was then in 2019, especially now that I’m not scared of dying of a seizure in the ring. Substance abuse issues are never really over, but it’s in the rearview," Moxley noted. (H/T: Fightful)

Jon Moxley is set to face Kenny Omega in a Steel Cage match during this week's AEW Dynamite.

Jon Moxley claims his mental health is better than ever, despite all the strain on his body

Moxley has become one of the biggest stars on the AEW roster, and many fans consider him to be the "heart and soul" of the promotion. While nothing has been confirmed as of yet, Jon Moxley and the Blackpool Combat Club will remain exclusive to AEW Dynamite for some time after the rumored Collision show debuts.

During the same interview, Moxley mentioned he feels better than ever as far as his mental health is concerned:

“Let’s face the facts: I’ve got a lot of miles on my body. You only live once and I don’t take it easy. I’ve pushed myself to get everything I can out of my body. Mentally, I feel better than ever," Moxley said. (H/T: Fightful)

With a massive Steel Cage match coming up, The Purveyor of Violence will put his body to the test one more time. Fans must wait and see which star will reign supreme on Wednesday night.
