The rivalry between WWE and AEW has been quietly heating up again over the last year, but it's still somewhat rare for either company's talents to directly address storylines and matches from across the promotional divide. However, AEW's MVP recently took his former company to task over an infamous match between Brock Lesnar and Kofi Kingston.
Kofi won the WWE Championship for the first time in April 2019. His win was the climax of the Kofimania movement, and a moment many fans felt he deserved. Unfortunately, Kingston lost the title in an infamous match in October of that year.
The New Day star's reign ended when Brock Lesnar obliterated him in just seven seconds on an episode of SmackDown. The moment generated enormous backlash, but Vince McMahon ignored it and carried on while Kingston was shunted back into the tag team division.
Speaking on the Marking Out podcast with co-host Dwayne Swayze, MVP called the title change "ridiculous" and said a lot of others felt that way, as well:
"It would seem that, to me, I thought that was just stupid killing Kofi off. I don't know, I could be completely wrong, I feel there was some measure of disingenuousness with that. I can't say exactly why. I thought there was no need to do that to Kofi. I thought that was ridiculous. A lot of people felt that way," said MVP. [H/T: Fightful]
AEW star MVP criticizes Bobby Lashley's booking under Triple H
Since leaving WWE, MVP has made his opinion of Vince McMahon very clear. However, he's also revealed that he had issues with the current Chief Content Officer, Triple H.
In a recent interview with BetIdeas, the Hurt Syndicate leader slammed the WWE CCO for his treatment of Bobby Lashley.
"After he [Triple H] took over, Bobby Lashley was reduced to the mid-card. Bobby Lashley is a bankable, marketable guy. And a two-time WWE Champion just got reduced to mid-card, whatever," he said.
MVP and Lashley have regained their momentum alongside Shelton Benjamin in AEW, and the three seem content now that their WWE tenures are over. Whether they can remain on top in Tony Khan's promotion remains to be seen.
