RAW after Royal Rumble 2020: 5 reasons why Edge was confronted by Randy Orton

Edge is back! He made his big in-ring return at the WWE Royal Rumble 2020 and as we mentioned in our articles yesterday, they intentionally had him confront and interact with Superstars he never has before - and one he has a big history with.

He wound up with three eliminations, sending out AJ Styles, Luke Gallows, and Randy Orton. The latter happened in the Final Four right when Orton and Edge were working with each other. On the latest episode of RAW, Edge came out to address the future and seemingly confirmed that he's back. If that wasn't enough, he was confronted by his old tag team partner Randy Orton - who welcomed him back.

While it seemed like an emotional reunion at first, it ended with an RKO - with Randy Orton turning heel against just a few months after. They stretched out the segment as much as they could, with Orton teasing a chair attack and going through with it.

#5 A Saudi Arabia match

WrestleMania 36 maybe 69 days or less away (depending on where you are in the world), but we shouldn't forget that there's a PPV in Saudi Arabia in less than a month. As we know, the Saudi Arabian officials love having legends heavily featured on the show and the local audience in attendance seems to love nostalgia way more than the weekly American audience.

Now that Edge is back from retirement, he's another major legend who will get a fat paycheque to put on little effort and have a match in Saudi Arabia. If WWE feels that Orton vs Edge isn't the direction for WrestleMania, they can have a short return feud for Saudi Arabia.

#4 Randy Orton is a safe and reliable worker

Whether you love him or hate him, Randy Orton is here to stay until 2024 at least (per his contract). There's a reason why he has such longevity - even more than The Miz: It's because of the safe and reliable work rate that they have.

While every Superstar has suffered injuries in the ring, Orton has a reputation of being a solid worker in the ring and although he may not have 5-star classics all the time, the style he's had has ensured that he has prevented suffering from many injuries in the recent years (with his last major injury spell being between late 2015 to the summer of 2016).

We must remember that Edge has returned but he's likely in a situation like Daniel Bryan - where he has to get a medical check-up and clearance every time he steps out of the ring. To ensure that he's safe, they need a reliable and safe wrestler and Randy Orton is the perfect dance partner for that.

#3 To test the waters with Edge

Edge was overwhelmed by the reaction he received on RAW

Again, we'd like to emphasize on why WWE needs to be very careful with Edge - not just physically. WWE usually has a good reputation of taking care of their performers who are out injured and we're sure Edge will be handled well in that regard.

The other aspect is the creative one - a department which WWE has struggled with in the last few years. While we do admit that RAW has been far better creatively under Paul Heyman, there will always be skepticism with how WWE could handle Edge in this day and age.

When you consider how different things are when he last wrestled in 2011 and now, the said skepticism is more than justified. Whichever stage it is, WWE may want to test the waters with Edge before looking at other potential opponents.

Luckily for him, he has a lot of great potential opponents should he be able to remain fit in this interesting 2020 run.

#2 Their history together

This is the most obvious reason of all, isn't it? Simply put, the two have a history together and WWE may have brought Edge back and put him right away with the most familiar man on the roster. After all, the roster has gone through a radical change since he left and has been filled with Superstars who came up only after he retired.

In that sense, there's a sense of familiarity. Not that Edge doesn't want to compete against the young guns of today, but the reaction that the Edge-Orton interaction had on both nights were great.

At the Royal Rumble, it was surprisingly his interaction with Orton throughout that got the loudest reaction. They were certainly listening carefully to the reaction as well and you can believe that they did the same when Orton offered a Rated RKO reunion on RAW.

It was a clever ploy to get heat and one that worked well. While many of us may complain that we would rather see Edge with a new opponent, a large part of the audience will be happy to see this match.

#1 A WrestleMania match

The road to WrestleMania has begun

This is, again, one of the more obvious reasons. While our first point indicated at a possible Saudi Arabia match, we wouldn't be surprised to see this as the direction for WrestleMania 36.

We're a bit surprised that they teased the match this early rather than in late February. It brings the question as to whether Edge will be appearing week-in and week-out, every alternate week or on an irregular basis. We'll surely be seeing him a lot more in March, but that could also mean a relative absence in all of February.

It makes sense that WWE would want to do the match at WrestleMania. They need marquee names and this one is big enough that they don't even need a title involved to sell it.

On that note, we don't hate the idea of this as a WrestleMania match, even if we would rather see Edge go up against someone he hasn't faced before like AJ Styles.
