Hunter x Hunter chapter 408 recap
In the previous chapter, Borksen initiated the Negotiation card game with Morena. She first drew the Aim card, whereupon Morena stated her intention to wipe out the Kakin royal family and eventually all of humanity.
Morena then revealed that she was a carnival orphan who had replaced the original Morena Prudo, who was now dead. The original Morena was a royal with no right to succeed.
The current Morena then went on to describe the Carne Levare, a feast where a random village is singled out and the villagers are exploited for the royal family's entertainment.
During one of the feasts, Morena's mother gave birth to her, but she was too busy serving the royals to notice. She died two years later, leaving Morena as a child whom the royals then trafficked. Over the decades, her hatred for the royals only increased as she saw more and more children orphaned.
Morena then went on to explain her Nen ability, which allows her to grant powers to those who align with her goals. She explained that she valued Borksen's Specialist Nen type for its rarity and versatility, so she wanted to recruit her but also hinted that she could replace her if necessary.
As the game went on, Borksen ended up with two cards: the No and Return cards. If she ended up retaining the former till the end of the game, it would mean that she had rejected Morena's request for her to join the Heil-Ly Family. That would make her too dangerous to be allowed to live, so she would be killed off. On the other hand, the Return card would ensure her survival.
At this point, the game was interrupted by an alarm signaling Prince Benjamin's declaration of martial law.
What to expect from Hunter x Hunter chapter 409 (speculative)
In Hunter x Hunter chapter 409, it will be interesting to see if Borksen and Morena will continue to play since martial law has been declared. Borksen has no choice but to stay in the game, as forfeiting would cost her nearly all her freedom. However, it has not been explained whether Morena is capable of ending the game.
With only one round left for each of them, Morena only has to do some more answering before Borksen reveals her final card, which should not take too long. How the situation resolves and what ultimately happens to Borksen will certainly be interesting to follow in the next installment.
