On Friday, October 13, 2023, the official website for the Frieren anime series revealed four new cast members and a new key visual for its upcoming new story arc. The new story arc is set to begin with the series’ seventh episode overall, set to air on Friday, October 20, 2023, in the series’ usual 11 pm Japanese Standard Time block.

The Frieren anime has proven to be one of the most popular of the Fall 2023 season across its first three weeks of premiering, especially in the wake of its 2-hour premiere special. The series also made history with its premiere as the first ever television anime series to premiere in NTV’s “Kinyo Roadshow” programming block, which is typically reserved for feature films.

The Frieren anime serves as an adaptation of author Kanehito Yamada and illustrator Tsukasa Abe’s original manga series of the same name, which first debuted in April 2020. Like the television anime adaptation, the original manga also found immense popularity upon its debut, and has been regularly serialized since.

The latest

As mentioned above, the Frieren anime is set to begin a new story arc entitled “Aura the Guillotine” with its seventh episode overall, set to air next Friday, October 20, 2023. The series announced four new cast members set to join the production for the new arc and also released a key visual featuring these new characters.

Ayana Taketatsu is set to join as Aura, as are Junichi Suwabe as Lügner, Manaka Iwami as Linie, and Kouki Ohsuzu as Draht. All four characters can be seen opposing Frieren and her group, with Aura seemingly being the leader of the four. A horde of what are presumably their soldiers can be seen standing behind the foursome in the key visual.

Atsumi Tanezaki plays the eponymous Frieren, who is also the series’ protagonist. Other previously announced cast members include Nobuhiko Okamoto as Himmel, Hiroki Touchi as Heither, Yoji Ueda as Eisen, Kana Ichinose as Fern, Chiaki Kobayashi as Stark, Atsuki Tanaka as Flamme, and Hiroki Yasumoto as Qual.

Keiichiro Saito is directing the anime at Madhouse studios, with Tomohiro Suzuki in charge of the series scripts. Reiko Nagasawa is designing the characters, while Evan Call is composing the music for the series. YOASOBI performs the opening theme song “Yusha,” which translates to “hero,” and milet performs the ending theme song “Anytime Anywhere.”

Yamada and Abe originally launched the manga in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in April 2020. The 11th compilation volume for the series shipped in Japan on September 15 of this year. Viz Media published an English version of the eighth volume on June 20 of this year and will publish the ninth volume on October 17.
