One Piece fans have come up with several theories about Dracule Mihawk's past and how he became the powerful swordsman who wanders around the seas. There have been several theories claiming that he could have been a Celestial Dragon who left them for an unknown reason and a theory on X made by @realzoro_o suggests a connection with the Holy Knights.

These individuals are the top soldiers of the World Government in One Piece and work for Imu alongside the Gorosei, with this theory suggesting that the Dracule family could have been part of the Holy Knights. This also points out how Mihawk's father was perhaps the first member of his family to get the leader position of this order and was betrayed, leading his son to abandon this position and become a Marine Hunter.

Explaining how Mihawk could be connected to the Holy Knights in One Piece

This theory by @realzoro_o starts by stating that Joy Boy and Imu were part of the Nerona family, with the latter taking the life of their father to reach the top position as a ruler. This would lead Joy Boy to form his crew and the Ancient Kingdom, kick-starting their conflict, and the future of the World Government would have reached that position thanks to the help of the Figarland family.

Therefore, this would mean that the Figarland household has a long history of supporting Imu, with the Holy Knights being their reward for their loyalty. That means that this order has always been led by a member of this family but, during the events of the God Valley incident, something happened and a member of the Dracule household, Mihawk's father, took over the position.

This would be the first time that a non-Figarland led the Holy Knights while confirming the theory that Mihawk is a former Celestial Dragon. However, perhaps someone wasn't happy with Dracule's position not belonging to a Figarland, with maybe Garling betraying him, thus leading to the current Marine Hunter leaving Mary Geoise and starting his journey as a pirate.

Another major aspect of this One Piece theory is Mihawk's sword, Yoru, which could be connected to the leader of the Holy Knights. A small, teased flashback to the God Valley incident shows a small figure of the Supreme Commander of this order wielding a somewhat big blade that looks like Yoru, which could imply that Mihawk, upon leaving Mary Geoise, took that weapon as a way to challenge the World Government.

Mihawk might have been involved in the God Valley incident, as he was a mature young man when Gol D. Roger was executed. This could suggest he was one of the Holy Knights and had a connection with Garling Figarland, potentially linking to the betrayal Eiichiro Oda mentioned in SBS volume 108.

Final thoughts

Dracule Mihawk is one of the most mysterious One Piece characters at the moment and there are a lot of directions his character could take in the coming arcs. However, this idea of him being connected to the Holy Knights could explain his extraordinary fighting abilities and also how he was betrayed.
