At the time when the series’ fourth season was first announced, source material illustrator So-bin expressed joy at the 10th volume finally being animated. They’re said to particularly enjoy this volume, so fans are surely in for a treat as Overlord season four goes on. The franchise has also announced an anime film project which will cover the Holy Kingdom arc.

Overlord is set in the year 2138, when virtual reality gaming is extremely popular and immersive. Popular online game Yggdrasil is shut down one day, with protagonist Momonga not logging out before servers shut down. He’s then transformed into the image of a skeleton, becoming the “most powerful wizard,” Ains Ooal Gown.

The world of Yggdrasil changes dramatically from this point on, with non-player characters (NPCs) beginning to feel human emotions. Relinquishing his admittedly lackluster situation in real-life society, Momonga embraces the Ains Ooal Gown persona, striving to take over the new world Yggdrasil has blossomed into.

Overlord: Escape from Nazarick

Alongside the season four announcement, a new video game for the series was also announced. Overlord: Escape from Nazarick is a “Metroidvania” style 2D side-scroller, which will be released on PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch, presumably via the Nintendo E-shop.

Series creator Kugane Maruyama is overseeing the story, which will follow protagonist Clementine in the Great Tomb of Nazarick. She initially begins the game unarmed with amnesia, but her weapons and powers are regained throughout the adventure. Presumably, the story will unfold in this way as well.

With both season four and the franchise’s new videogame being announced, it’s certainly an exciting time for Overlord fans. Having not graced the small screen for nearly four years, Overlord season four will surely catch fire as long-time and new fans of the series check it out.
