Boruto Two Blue Vortex chapter 16 was released on November 21, 2024. The chapter gave Sumire a spotlight and, as expected, her character still feels like that of a fan girl of the protagonist. With her character not reaching the heights the fandom was expecting, she might go down as one of the biggest disappointments of the series.
However, her character might be saved if the author of the manga series considers making her anime-original story canon. In the anime, she is the last member of Danzo's Anbu Black Ops and her current identity is a cover for her to keep her origins a secret. As the manga hasn't given her any lore development, her dark origins canon might be the only way to do her character justice.

Boruto: Why making Sumire's anime-original origins canon might be the only way to make her character interesting
Sumire is one of the supporting characters from the Boruto franchise and also a part of the Hidden Leaf's Team 15. As expected, being one of the supporting characters, she was hardly given any screen time in the original source material (the manga series) and was famous as the girl who had a crush on the protagonist but was too shy to confess it.
However, she was a different character in the anime as it gave her more lore than the manga. Sumire was part of Root, a side plan of Danzo's Anbu Black Ops. After Danzo died, the Anbu Black Ops were destroyed and so was Root. Moreover, any person linked to these organizations was secluded and ostracized. Sadly, a part of this was Sumire's family.
During this time, while they were hiding from others, Sumire's mother died after falling fatally ill. This had a mental effect on her because she was extremely close to her mother. After this incident, Tanuki Shigaraki, Sumire's father and a true follower of Danzo's methods, tried passing his will to his daughter.
He gave Sumire the Genzo Tennou, a sealing jutsu that Tanuki developed under Danzo's orders. Right after this act, Tanuki Shigaraki passed away and Sumire became an orphan. She hid her true identity to honor her father's plans and started living under the name 'Sumire Kakei.' Eventually, she became the class representative of the protagonist's class.
In Boruto Naruto Next Generations, Sumire's skill set was also defined as she excelled at Water Release and Summoning jutsu techniques. Her most dangerous summoning was Nue, which she summoned from the underworld using the Genzo Tennou. With her lore in the anime being so complex and engaging, the authors of the manga should consider making Sumire's anime-original story canon.
Final thoughts
It is interesting to see how Sumire had such a complex character in the anime whereas in the manga, she is hardly remembered as a side character who has a crush on the protagonist.
Making her anime-original story canon might give the authors a chance to expand her story and even make Sumire a hidden spy (a third party in the battle between Hidden Leaf Village and the Shinju).
