Light Yagami is the main protagonist of the Death Note anime/manga series, which was created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

Released in December 2003, Death Note is known as one of the most popular anime series ever. The story follows Light Yagami, the main protagonist of the series who is a brilliant student who one day finds a Death Note that belonged to the Shinigami Ryuk. Ryuk dropped his Death Note in the human world because he was bored in the shinigami realm. The Death Note gives anyone the power to kill anyone by writing their name, timing, and cause of death in the note.

After finding the Death Note on his school grounds, he reads all the rules and thinks it is a joke. When he writes the name of one of the criminals, that person dies like how he wrote it, which makes him believe that it is true. Soon, he finds out about Ryuk but does not flinch even though he is a shinigami, which surprises Ryuk, who decides to stay with him.

Light decided to name himself Kira and wanted everyone to praise him like a God. Slowly, Light starts killing many criminals in Japan, but because of the sudden deaths of criminals, the greatest detective in Japan, “L” (Lawleit), finds out about him.

From there, the story takes off in a thrilling and mysterious fashion. In the end, Light Yagami dies, which ends the anime series. The series is still an anime fan's favorite, and anyone who wants to start anime should start with Death Note.
