World Baseball Classic Pool A: Cuba v Netherlands
Team Netherlands celebrate after 4-2 win after the World Baseball Classic Pool A game between Cuba and Netherlands

After a resounding win in their first game of the 2023 World Baseball Classic against Team Cuba, Team Netherlands are on a roll. Here's a look at how many players on the current roster were born in the Netherlands.

Team Netherlands primarily comprises players from the Netherlands and Europe and Dutch territories such as Aruba and Curacao. The biggest names in the Dutch lineup for the '23 WBC, Kenley Jansen, Xander Bogaerts, Jonathan Schoop, and Jurickson Profar, were born outside Europe in the Dutch territories. Starting pitcher Tom de Blok and shortstop Didi Gregorius are among the few players on the roster who were born in the country.

The rules for player eligibility in the World Baseball Classic require a player to be a citizen of the country they represent or hold a passport from that country. Additionally, players can be eligible if they are permanent legal residents of the country or were born there.

Team Netherlands remain favorites to win Pool A in World Baseball Classic

While Team Netherlands do not boast too many stars from the MLB, they are still a force to be reckoned with. They finished fourth in the last two editions of the World Baseball Classic while appearing in all editions since its conception in 2006. They have regularly performed well as a nation and are one of the best teams in Europe.

They may not have the biggest MLB names in their lineup. However, they still have players with solid major-league experience, like Xander Bogaerts, Didi Gregorius, and Jurickson Profar. Their performances on the field have been consistently impressive, and their opening-day win against Team Cuba did not surprise many. They are indeed one of the teams to watch out for.
