MLB insider confirms Bob Melvin as Giants' new manager

Bob Melvin is reportedly the San Francisco Giants new manager

According to reports, a deal to confirm Bob Melvin as the next manager of the San Francisco Giants is all but done. Per Jon Heyman, the manager's position was not vacant for very long.

Bob Melvin is a long-time manager who's been with a few teams throughout his career. Now, he'll be joining a new one as soon as he officially signs the contract.

Heyman reported on X, formerly known as Twitter:

"Giants do hire Bob Melvin, which was basically a fait accompli once the Padres gave permission to their rival to speak to him."

Melvin was only recently given permission to interview with the Giants. The San Diego Padres, now his former team, had to grant their skipper permission to speak with their rivals in the NL West.

Heyman believes that as soon as the interview was granted, the Padres were expecting the manager to skip town. Now, that seems to be the reality.

Bob Melvin set to take over SF Giants

The San Francisco Giants interviewed several candidates to replace Gabe Kapler after the manager did not return for the 2024 season. They interviewed Alyssa Nakken, an assistant coach who could have been the first female manager in the MLB.

Instead, they're going with a veteran presence in Bob Melvin. Things did not go according to plan for the Padres last year, which is partly why he's not staying there. With a roster of Juan Soto, Josh Hader, Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts, the expensive Padres could not make the playoffs.

Melvin is heralded as a good baseball mind, one that has a wealth of experience after working with the Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland Athletics.

He has a career record of 1517-1425 (.516) as a manager since 2003, when he took over with the Mariners. He's had pretty solid success everywhere he's gone, and he has three manager of the year awards to his name. He will try and continue that success in the Bay Area, where they are itching to have a successful team once again.
