In their respective roles as owner and GM of the Yankees, Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman have a lot to be proud of this season. However, as one MLB analyst has recently claimed, the biggest test for the executive tandem may begin after the 2024 playoffs finish.
On a recent appearance on The Phillies Show, former Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. joined hosts Jim Salisbury and Todd Zolecki to discuss Juan Soto's future with the Yankees. In response to Salisbury's question regarding whether or not the team will let Soto walk away in free agency, Amaro Jr claimed:
"They will not (let him leave in free agency), and if they do, then Brian Cashman should be fired. It's as simple as that, Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner should be fired... They can't, the man's too good of a player, they have to keep him, for the same reason they had to keep Judge. Don't be ridiculous"
The former GM continued to describe Juan Soto and Aaron Judge as "the most prolific 3-4 punch in the history of the game." Amaro used Brian Cashman's 2022 signing of Aaron Judge to $360 million as further evidence that the will exists in the Yankees' front office to keep their top stars.
"Juan Soto has now hit a home run in all 30 MLB ballparks. He's 25 years old" - Talkin' Yanks
Brian Cashman, who has been the GM of the Yankees since 1998, acquired Juan Soto last December via a trade with the San Diego Padres. After inking a one-year, $30 million deal with the Bombers, Soto has had a career year. In addition to setting a career-high in home runs with 40, Soto has hit .288/.419/.578.
Juan Soto urges fans to "talk to Brian Cashman"
Despite being a member of the New York Yankees for such a short time, the will among fans obviously exists to keep Soto in town. In late August, Soto answered a question from SNY about the "Soto please stay" chants that were heard in the Bronx:
"I don't know, they have to talk to Cashman"
Everyone, especially Cashman, knows that Soto will not come with a cheap price tag. However, judging by the monumental impact that Soto has already had on the club, do not be surprised if the Yankees dig deep to find the resources to ensure that Juan Soto remains a member of the team for a long time to come.
