The 2022 Chicago White Sox were not the team many expected them to be, and Jose Abreu provided some insight as to why. Abreu spent the first nine years of his career with the White Sox, racking up individual accolades including Rookie of the Year and MVP wins. He was a leader for the team and is well acquainted with the reasons why they didn't live up to expectations in 2022.Jose Abreu placed much of the blame on the lack of a good culture on the team, citing the fact that it didn't feel like a family. It doesn't matter how talented a team is, if they are not united they won't get very far, as many teams throughout history have discovered.MLB writer Steve Greenberg interviewed Abreu and shared it to Twitter.Steve Greenberg@SLGreenbergJose Abreu on life with the Astros and leaving the White Sox, who ‘weren’t a real family’ in 2022 chicago.suntimes.com/sports-saturda…28737Jose Abreu on life with the Astros and leaving the White Sox, who ‘weren’t a real family’ in 2022 chicago.suntimes.com/sports-saturda… https://t.co/6Rd2493zIVIt is safe to say that Chicago White Sox fans were divided by this interview. Some saw Abreu as a player who worked as hard as he could for as long as he could. Others saw him as a failed leader of a team that had a lot of promise snuffed out.Lynnsanity@_soxinsider@SLGreenberg He deserved better. The systemic issues that the team was facing clearly went beyond players not having fun in the locker room. The team was well built and should have battled for a playoff spot, but came up well short. Former manager Tony La Russa likely had a lot to do with this, and he was much maligned during his tenure.Da Bumm Show- Jacob@DaBummShow39@SLGreenberg God and people pretended this guy was a leader for so many years252@SLGreenberg God and people pretended this guy was a leader for so many yearsWhiteSoxSuz@WhiteSoxSuz@SLGreenberg To all the “team leader” detractors… Abreu was 1st in/last out EVERY practice & game, was he supposed to take guys by the hand? The Minnesota Twins underperformed, and the Cleveland Guardians wound up winning the crown with only 92 wins. This is part of what makes the season’s failure so painful, because the scenario for them to win was present.Bill McCormick@BillMcSciFi@SLGreenberg As a White Sox fan, it hurts to read this. They are a fantastically run organization and are perrenial contenders for the World Series championship. Both sides benefitted greatly from Abreu signing with the Astros. As the defending champions, they will have extremely high expectations on them, which Jose Abreu could help them reach.
