The New York Mets are starting to take strides in free agency. While their priority is getting a deal done with Juan Soto, they have still made some other deals to help improve the club for the 2025 season.
On Wednesday, the club announced the signing of Genesis Cabrera to a minor league contract. The hard-throwing lefty will have the opportunity to pitch his way into the bullpen at spring training.
This is a great addition for the club as they currently do not have many lefties in their bullpen. The only lefty relief pitcher they have on the roster is Danny Young.
While Cabrera is not Juan Soto, the fanbase is pretty pumped about the signing. There is almost no risk involved in bringing him in on a minor league deal, and he could be a big part of the bullpen next season.
"Stearns signing Dominican to bring Soto" one fan posted, referring to Mets GM David Stearns and free agent Juan Soto.
"Budget [Blake] Snell lets go" said another.
"Minor league deal is a bargain" said another.
Not only is signing Cabrera not risky, but he is also from the Dominican Republic. Could this be to make Juan Soto feel more at home?
"I love this" said another.
"I like this, power arm from the left side. Good chance to take" said another.
"Chef Stearns at it again!" said another.
Signing Cabrera is great, as it potentially fills a hole for next season. however, the club needs to turn its attention to acquiring starting pitchers this offseason.
The Mets have to address their starting rotation
The Mets came into this offseason with a few holes to fill. They have done so with acquiring Genesis Cabrera but they have a bigger hole when looking at their starting rotation.
Kodai Senga remains at the top of the rotation but battled multiple injuries this past season. The rest of their rotation includes David Peterson, Paul Blackburn, Jose Butto, and Tylor Megill. Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and Jose Quintana are all free agents this offseason.
New York could turn their attention to the top option available like Corbin Burnes or Max Fried. Either one would instantly boost the club's rotation, but can they sign one of them and Soto? If there was one owner in the league looking to bring in multiple stars this winter, it would be Steven Cohen.
