Division Series - Los Angeles Dodgers v New York Mets - Game Three
Does Magic Johnson own the LA Dodgers?

Does Magic Johnson own the Los Angeles Dodgers? The former NBA superstar has shifted his relationship with sports to the executive side since retiring. Now, instead of impacting a team on the court or field, he's doing so from the other side.

With the Dodgers, Johnson is a part owner. He owns a 2.3% stake in the team, so he's a minority owner. He is part of Guggenheim Baseball Management, which is the full group of owners. It includes:

  • Mark Walter
  • Magic Johnson
  • Stan Kasten
  • Peter Guber
  • Bobby Patton
  • Todd Boehly

The team is also owned by Billie Jean King, Ilana Kloss, Alan Smolinisky and Robert L. Plummer. The team has been owned by these people since 2012, when they bought the team from Frank McCourt.

There have been a few changes to the overall ownership team, but Johnson and others have been mainstays in the role for more than a decade now. The ownership group purchased the team for $2.5 billion then.

It is now worth $4.8 billion, the second-most for an MLB team behind the New York Yankees.

Why does Magic Johnson own the Dodgers?

Johnson is largely a part owner of the Dodgers because he loves sports and he loves Los Angeles. The former Lakers legend has been an icon in the LA sports scene for a long time, so owning the LA Dodgers is another way to stay as such.

He's largely a hands-off owner, but it's his (and others') money and investment that allows the team to field such a great roster every year.
