The New York Mets have been dealt a blow as closer Edwin Diaz suffered an injury while representing Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, leaving the team scrambling for potential replacements. The star pitcher picked up a knee injury while celebrating his team's victory against the Dominican Republic. The Mets' bullpen was a key strength last season, but without Diaz, they will need to look elsewhere for their closer.
One name that has been linked to the team is former Yankees star Zack Britton. Britton is a seasoned veteran with plenty of experience in the AL East. He has spent time with both the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees, where he was an effective closer. In his career, Britton has accumulated 167 saves, a 3.05 ERA, and 512 strikeouts in 556 innings pitched. He has also been an All-Star twice, in 2015 and 2016.
Another option is former Brewers pitcher Corey Knebel, who has entered the free angecy after an underwhelming season with the Philadelphia Phillies. Knebel was a valuable closer during his time with the Brewers when he was fit to play. However, injuries plagued most of his career and he could never realize his potential.

The third best option for them may be signing veteran pitcher Will Harris. Harris announced his retirement from baseball last month but could be persuaded by the Mets to join them for a year. He is a former All-Star and a former World Series champion who could add valuable experience.
Two other players that the Mets may consider taking over Edwin Diaz's duties have already been signed. David Robertson and Adam Ottavino are both talented pitchers who are capable of shouldering the responsibility.
Mets star Edwin Diaz suffers freak injury during World Baseball Classic
New York Mets star closer Edwin Diaz suffered a knee injury following Puerto Rico's win over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. The Puerto Ricans managed to defeat a formidable Dominican Republic side to progress into the knockout stage of the tournament. During the post-match celebrations, things turned ugly for Edwin Diaz when he suffered an injury which left him in considerable pain doubtful for the MLB season ahead.
While the extent of Diaz's injury will only be clear in the next few days, the Mets will surely be plotting moves to remedy the situation. Whether they sign someone or not, they already have a pitching lineup that is loaded with talent.
