Houston Astros news: Forrest Whitley is on the comeback

The Houston Astros news reports that Forrest Whitley will be on the mound to start for the team in today's spring training action. Their top prospect, who has had Tommy John surgery before, will be their starter as they hope he can get back to where he was pre-injury.

It's been a long journey for Whitley, who might have an expanded role in an Astros rotation that's no longer dependent on Justin Verlander.

The right-handed pitcher believes he's ready to contribute, though. Today will be his first test, but he feels good.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Whitley said:

"I feel like I’m in a good place to go and show my best self. Any time you can take the mound and show what you can do is always great. I feel ready to go, it’s just one start but I can go and show what I got."

After struggling in 2022, Whitley is ready to bounce back and be a major contributor on a World Series contender this year.

Houston Astros news: Jose Abreu looks right at home and Carlos Correa's brother rakes

In other Houston Astros news, Jose Abreu made his team debut during their first spring training game. Abreu came over from the Chicago White Sox, where he'd spent his entire MLB career.

The Cuban first baseman filled a major hole at first base for the Astros and cemented them as genuine threats to repeat as World Series victors.

Additionally, Carlos Correa's brother, who was selected by the team in the 2018 MLB draft, is playing with the team for Spring Training.

The utility player isn't expected to challenge for a starting spot on the Opening Day roster, especially with the Astros having a lot of depth, but he did hit a double in early action. Perhaps he can get enough going to warrant a spot on the roster.

Per Houston Astros news, the team is 1-1 thus far in spring action and will turn to Whitley for their next game. They don't have a lot to figure out ahead of Opening Day as they are arguably the most complete roster in baseball.
