“I wasn’t playing like the best version” - Anthony Rizzo gears up for strong comeback on return after drawing near to rehab

After a bizarre 2023 that left Anthony Rizzo injury-stricken and unable to produce like he once did, the Yankees third baseman had high hopes for 2024. Unfortunately for Rizzo, those hopes were dashed relatively early in the campaign.

On June 16, Rizzo collided with Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino during a play at first base. After the first baseman tumbled in pain, it was later determined that he had suffered a fractured arm, and was transferred to the 60-day IL.

At the time of his injury, Rizzo was already having a very weak season. Last year, Rizzo collided with San Diego Padres runner Fernando Tatis Jr. at first base, which left him with a head injury. On account of the ostensible concussion, Rizzo went on a streak with only one home run in 46 games before being placed on the long-term IL in September.

Now, Anthony Rizzo has returned to batting and fielding practice. Although New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has indicated that Rizzo's return is still several months away, the 34-year-old remains hopeful, and recently told the New York Post:

"I feel great and am seeing the ball well. I’ve got to come back and produce. It’s not like I’m coming back having hit 25 homers with a bunch of RBIs and a good average. I wasn’t playing like the best version of myself before I got hurt."

A 2016 World Series champ as a member of the Chicago Cubs, Rizzo has shown his power at the MLB level before. A five-time thirty home run hitter, Rizzo was hitting just .223/.289/.341 with 8 home runs and 28 RBIs in 70 games before his injury.

Questions persist around Anthony Rizzo's return

Though Rizzo's comment may excite fans, there is still no concrete timeline as to when the former All-Star might return. In his comments to the New York Post, Yankees manager Aaron Boone maintained that some tests still need to be done before Rizzo is cleared for rehab games, but added:

“I think he’s in a good place physically, and he has experience from having gone through [rehab] that has put him in a good spot. I’ve been pleased with his at-bat quality.”

As the Yankees work increasingly hard to fend off the surging O's, a bat like Anthony Rizzo in their lineup would be an invaluable addition.
