New York Yankees top prospect Jasson Dominguez got the nod to start over Alex Verdugo at left field against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. However, the rookie committed a critical defensive error in the first inning, allowing the O's to score the opening two runs of the game on a routine flyball.

There were subsequently loud groans of disappointment from Yankees supporters on social media over Dominguez's expensive fielding lapse.

Marcus Stroman started on the mound for the Yankees, but the Orioles had loaded up the bases when the left-handed Colton Cowser stepped up to the batter's box in the top of the first inning with no outs on the board. On a 1-1 count, Stroman delivered a sinker on the outer half of the plate, and Coswer put a good swing on the ball to drive it high toward the opposite corner of the field.

Nevertheless, Jasson Dominguez had a good starting position at left field and needed to move about 15 yards to grab the flyball on the warning track. However, the Yankees outfielder made a complete mess of the catch, and the Orioles fully capitalized on the error. Dominguez's mistake cost his team two early runs, even though they were fortunate to get a runner out at third base.

Here are some reactions from fans on X/Twitter:

"That will be what keeps Dominguez out of the lineup in the post season," another fan said.

The Orioles claimed the opening encounter of the three-game series on Tuesday, but the Yankees can claim the division title if they come back to win the series.

Jasson Dominguez made a bright start to his MLB career when the New York Yankees called him up to the team last September. Unfortunately, he managed to make just eight appearances before getting injured and undergoing elbow surgery in the offseason.

Dominguez started the year on the IL and played with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre until the Yankees called him up to join the team earlier this month following some hesitation. But despite high expectations from fans, he has not quite performed as they had hoped so far.

At the moment, Dominguez is batting .205/.300/.364 with .664 OPS, two home runs and seven RBIs in 14 games. However, he has already earned worse than -4 defensive runs saved in his career, even though he has played less than 25 big league games.
