New York Yankees pitcher Luis Gil is coming off a phenomenal season this past year. The hard-throwing righty started 29 games, compiling a 15-7 record with a 3.50 ERA across 151.2 innings of work.
He was just recently named the American League Rookie of the Year with Paul Skenes taking home the award for the National League. Gil was certainly a big reason for much of the Bronx Bomber's success in 2024.
Being a rookie, Gil had Gerrit Cole to look up to. During a recent airing of Foul Territory, the young ace talked about how the reigning six-time All-Star has helped him.
"Gerrit [Cole] has been a great incluence on me. He has taught me a lot. He has taught me how to handle the situations and the emotions when I'm on the mound and how to attack hitters, and I hope I keep learning from Gerrit in the near future," Gil said through his interpreter.
However, it was not just Cole that Gil had great things to say about. He also talked about former Yankees pitcher Luis Severino and how he was also a big influence on Gil's game.
"Luis [Severino] is also like a big brother to me. He is always checking in on me and he is aware when I was pitch and he watches my outings and we talk the next day. He gives me some tips and advice on what I was doing wrong and what I need to adjust" said Gil.
Luis Gil becomes the first Yankees player to win AL ROY since Aaron Judge
Aaron Judge was the last Yankees player to win an American League Rookie of the Year Award. he did so back in 2017 after he started turning heads with his immense power at the plate.
Luis Gil has become the first Yanks pitcher to win the award since Dave Righetti won the award back in 1981. Fans should be excited about the potential they have here.
The starting rotation is elite with guys like Gerrit Cole and Marcus Stroman. If Carlos Rodon can find his groove again like he did a few seasons ago, this could be one of the best rotations in the AL.
The Yanks could do some serious damage next season, especially if they can re-sign Juan Soto. The front office will do their best to retain the superstar and be contenders again next season.
