Khalil Lee, part of the New York Mets' 40-men roster, is facing allegations of physical and verbal abuse against his ex-girlfriend, according to a Syracuse.com report.

Lee was charged with criminal obstruction of breath in August last year. An arrest warrant was issued by the Syracuse Police. A lawsuit was also filed in federal court on Wednesday, which names Lee on allegations that he assaulted his ex-girlfriend while playing for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets last season.

Khalil Lee was traded to the Mets in February 2021. He made his MLB debut in 2021 and has made 13 appearances so far.

He and his girlfriend were involved in a five-month relationship that ended in September 2021. They continued to stay in touch and in May 2022, the Mets outfielder asked her to fly to Syracuse and expressed his desire to restart their relationship.

Later that night, she confronted him over an intimate text conversation that she discovered on his phone. The ensuing argument turned violent as Lee choked her, leaving her unable to breathe or speak for some time.

A few excerpts from the report read:

"After Lee called her ugly, Hill slapped Lee in the face and walked away, she says. Lee then grabbed Hill’s box braids and “yanked her backward” causing her to hit the kitchen island.
"Hill felt Lee’s hand around her neck but could not breathe or speak to tell him to let her go, she claims. After around 10 to 15 seconds, Lee let go and pushed Hill away from him."

The New York Mets have also released a statement on the matter:

“The Mets immediately notified MLB upon becoming aware of the allegations. We will fully comply with MLB’s policy and cannot comment until the completion of the league’s investigative process.”

However, it remains unclear when the Mets became aware of these allegations, as per MLB insider Andy Martino. He tweeted:

''What is not detailed in that statement, and what I have not been able to get an immediate answer to, is when the Mets became aware of the allegations.''

MLB has also opened an investigation into the matter. According to the lawsuit, the league counsel was also informed of the charge Khalil Lee is facing.
