Zack Greinke will be entering his 20th MLB season in 2023, and he is taking full advantage of spring training. This time, taking advantage means giving up hits and allowing runners on base.

Greinke said that he wanted to work on pickoffs, and the only way to work on that is to have runners on base. If this is part of his plan, he is a genius, and if not, it is a genius excuse after a bad performance.

Greinke has done all there is to do in the major leagues. This includes winning a Cy Young Award and receiving six All-Star selections. His spot on the Kansas City Royals is beyond secure, so he can afford a rough spring training outing.

In the long run, this pickoff practice he orchestrated could be more valuable than pitching in March.

Twitter user Kevin Agee shared the remarkable Greinke quote on the popular social media platform.

Kansas City Royals fans, and the MLB community at large, have come to love Zack Greinke and his unique personality, which has endeared him to the sporting world. Being wholly authentic while putting up tremendous results put him on a fast track to fan-favorite status.

Some purists will argue that Zack Greinke giving less than his full effort as a pitcher in spring training is a mistake. But in reality, spring training is essentially practice, and he felt he needed to practice something other than simply pitching.

If he was a rookie, it may have been a different situation, but a veteran with his experience deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Greinke posted an impressive ERA of 3.68 in 2022 and will look to repeat that performance in 2023. The Royals have a solid roster and hope to go over .500 this season. Their American League Central rivals, the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians, will not make it easy for them.

Zack Greinke is truly a once-in-a-generation pitcher both on and off the field.

Can the Kansas City Royals send Zack Greinke out with a winning record?

Greinke is approaching the end of his storied career and likely doesn't want to be on a team that loses over 100 games. The team does not want one of the best pitchers in franchise history to end his career on a losing season.

Greinke has not confirmed that 2023 will be his final season, but he is certainly nearing the end. Hopefully for him, the Royals can put together a season worthy of the future Hall of Famer.
